A MARKET HOUSE.— Why is it that |
Hertford cannot have a market house? |
• >ther towns, of les- population, possess
-uch institutions, but we seem rtoomert i
t" all the inconvenience and disagreea
ble circumstances of picking up our but
ter. egg<, chickens, etc., wherever we
may chance to find them. Then the in
opiality of prices is perfectly abomina
hle. At one end of the town butter fre-j
<)uently -ell- at 20 cents jjer pound,
whilst at the other it brings :{5 to 10.
I'he pork business is, at present, an il
lustration of this matter. Dressed hogs j
have sold at 9, 10, 11, 12and 1:1 cents per j
pound on the same day. Now, this is :
•ili wrong and would l>e remedied by j
the erection of a market. In order to
get the sense of our people upon this
"ibject, we propose that a vote be taken
at the coming Spring election, for and
against a market house. Meanwhile
tt'e would call the attention of the bor
ough fathers to this (as we consider it)
important subject.
