Bi TTKB. -The price of butter and
the scarcity of the article are such that
many families will soon be com polled to
do without thi- lunirt y, for luxury it
inu-t be, at present, considered. Im
pres-i-tl with this idea, some practical
genius has got off the following parody:
See the kine so sleek and hairy.
Calmly chewing at their cud ;
Pasture green around them growing,
And gild flies buzzing in the wood ;
Tell them that you'd know their answer.
As you question every cow—
"Muley. tell me. tell me truly.
Who will pay for butter now ?"
CHURLS —Around the markets Tarn marching,
Asking who will tell me how.
In the name of all that's fearful,
We ciin pay for butter now '
The farmers tell us. to our sorrow,
That cows are very dry this year.
But who can comfort from this borrow,
While butter's so extremely dear '
Shouid you offer them but thirty.
They'd kick up a precious row,
So I insist on loudly bawling—
Who can pay for butter now!
CHURLS —Around the markets I am marching,
Asking who will tell me how,
In the name of all that's dreadful
We exit pay for butter now '
CHANGE OF WEATHER. —The soft
and balmy airs of litdiunSummer, have
given place to cold and chilling blasts
and murky, gloomy skies. The weather,
so tine for weeks, lias suddenly chang
ed, transporting u- in a single day from
the pleasant embrace of lingering Au
tumn, to the presence of stern and icy
Winter. Thesuddenness of the change
of utmo-phere, is one ol" the draw-bucks
to tiie healthfulness of our climate. In
fiueiixn and its kindred diseases are
thus produced, and too much care can
not be taken to prevent their attacks.
At this season of the year, all unneces
sary exposure should, if possible, be
avoided. Especially should the com
fort of children and persons of weak
constitutions, IK* looked to. We make
these suggestions for the benefit of all
who may choose to profit by them.
THE HIGH PRICK OF PAPER. —PajK-r
has risen almost one hundred percent,
since the first of August, and is now
quite as high it was at any time last
year, and the tendency is-till onward
and upward. There is little prospect
for relief before next spring. Paper,
ink, labor, and all the materials which
go to make a newspaper are so high,
that no proprietor can afford to publish
a paper for less than double the price
receivetl before the war. Still, people
complain because the prices are not re
duced, never thinking that the matter
is entirely beyond the control of pub
lishers.— Wexfniuixtci' Sentinel.
WE understand that the "Family
iteeord" which is becoming so popular
everywhere, is published only in Phil
adelphia, and that any person publish
ing the work elsewhere, will do so ille
gally. The publishers, Bartleson&Uo.,
inform us through their agent, Mr. R.
W. Berkstresser, that they will prose
cute such to the full extent of the law.

riMfE HOME JOI'IiNAL for ISM'..
A high-toned and brilliant Literary ami Artistic
founuil.
NEW VOLUME—NEW ATTRACTIONS.
Established in 1848. THE HOME JOI RJCAI., (on the
sixth of -January next.) for the tiernlietk year,
greets its old friends and subscribers.
It. is still conducted by N. P. WILLIS, assisted
by au efficient corps of able editors, talented con
tributors. and spicy correspondents.
Mr. WILLIS, while maintaining his allowed very
able topic. The Chronir/e of Gayety ami Fashion,
thinks he has succeeded in establishing a se/mrate
he \t authority for all that concerns the livelier pro
gress of women.
A.i the voire of this new want of society, the
Home Journal claims to be the indispensable first
need of the ladies. One of the features of the new
series will be the publication of a new and beauti
ful story, bv ALPHOSSE DE LAMARTISE. entitled
FIOR D 1 A LIZA : An Idyll of Italian Life,
which is pronounced by eminent European critics,
'•the 'Paul and Virginia' of the nineteenth centu
ry,' and which is being translated for ourcolumns
by GEOBOE PERRY This will run through about
ten numbers. In the first number of the coming
volume will be commenced an entire NEW SERIES
of articles, entitled MATRIMONIAL INFELICI
TIES. by the well-known and popular humorous
writer, BARRY GRAY, author of "Married Life,"
etc., etc. As a part of our plan to keep our read
ers an fait of the living literature of the world,
and serve up for their cosmopolitan taste ehoico
condensations from living writers of every country,
we have enlisted the service of some able writers
to translate BRIBE Rosr AM ES from the French, tier
man and Russian current literature.
But romance will be only a subordinate depart
ment ; while a prominent feature of the new vol
ume will be Original ami Sparkling Skeleta l of
character, persons and places.
The author of "Ashes from the Pipe of an Old
Smoker;" "Daisy Howard "The Dreamer," and
other favorite essayists, will figure under this head.
In Foreign. Corresjton.elen.ee the coming volume
will be especially brilliant. Among other writers,
MRS. ESTELLE ANNA LEWIS, the poetess, and
HARRY HAREWOOD LEECH, the essayist, (both
now residing abroad.) will act as special correspon
dents, jotting down for our readers everything that
is new and interesting in the world of letters, art,
fashion and society. The AMISKMKNT DEPART
MENT is under tfie charge of H. A. DELILLIL, au
accomplished critic, who will keep our readers well
informed of all thut is interesting, on both sides of
the Atlantic, in matters Musical and Dramatic.
in Belles-Lettres, Poetry, Art-Criticism, Book
Reviews, original essays, social, fashion and foreign
gossip, spicy letters, short sketches, pithy para
graphs. personal items, early extracts from unpub
lished works, choice selections from English, French
and other foreign periodicals, and all, in fact, that
tends to make an instructive and entertaining news
paper, the Home Journal will still retain its repu
tation as the favorite of the belles lettres press.
It need hardly be mentioned that the editors are
proud of the position assigned to the paper of be
ing the unexeeptiimably cultivated reference of
polite people : its high moral tone will always be
observed, and nothing will be admitted into its col
umns that would not be compatible with a paper
intended for the moral and refined home of the
best classes.
We take this opportunity of thanking our many
Southern subscribers for a return of their patron
age. and can assure them that the editors will still
keep the columns of the Home Journal free from
political and religious discussions, and will confine
themselves rather to their motto, to "Encourage
the memorable, the progressive and the beautiful.
