BUTTER. -The price of butter and
tiie scarcity of the article are such that
many families will soon l>ecompelled to
do without this fuxiti'j/, for luxury it
must be, at present, considered. Ini
presscnl with this idea, some practical
fjenius has <jot oil' the following parody:
Sec the kino so sleek and hairy.
Caluily chewing at their cud :
Pasture jrrern around them growing,
And gad tlies buzzing in the wood ;
Tell theui that you'd know their answer.
As you question every cow—
"Muley. tell tne. tell me truly,
Who will pay for butter now I"
CHORCS— Around the markets lam marching,
Asking who will tell tne how,
In the name of all that's fearful,
We ean pay for butter now ?
The farmers tell us. to our sorrow.
That eows are very dry this year.
But who ean comfort from this 1 borrow.
While butter's so extremely dear ?
Should you offer them but thirty.
They'd kiek up a precious row.
So I insist on loudly bawling—
Who ean pay for butter now !
CHORCS —Around the markets I am marching.
Asking who will tell me how.
In the naiue of all that's dreadful
We can pay for butter now '
CIIANUK OF WKATHKK. —The soft
anil halmyairs of Indian Summer, have
given place to cold and chilling blasts
and murky,gloomy skies. The weather,
so tine for weeks, has suddenly chang
ed, transporting us in a single day from
the pleasant embrace of lingering Au
tumn, to t lie presence of stern and icy
Winter. Thcsuddenness of the change
of atmosphere, is one of the draw -hacks
to tiie healthfulness of our climate. In
fluenza and its kindred diseases are
thus produced, and too much care can
not be taken to prevent their attacks.
At this season of the year, all unneces
sary exposure -hould, if possible, he
avoided. Especially should the com
fort of children and persons of weak
constitutions, l>e looked to. We make
these suggestions for the benefit of all
who may choose to profit by them.
TICK limit PRICE OF PAPER. —Paper
has risen almost one hundred percent,
since the first of August, and is now
quite us high as it was at any time last
year, and the tendency is still onward
and upward. There is little prospect
for relief before next spring. Paper,
ink, lal>or, and all the materials which
goto make a new,-pa per are so high,
that no proprietor can afford to publish
a paper for less than double the price
received lxdbre the war. Still, people
complain because the prices are not re
duced, never thinking that the matter
is entirely Ix-yond the control of pub
lishers.— I Stiifiiicf.
WK understand that the "Family
Record" which is becoming so popular
everywhere, is published only in Phil

ing the work elsewhere, will do so ille

inform us through their agent, .Mr. K.
\V. licrkstresser, that they will prose
cute such to the full extent of the law.
