The pioperty of th' company is all owned in fee
simple and is all paid for; and consists of the fol
lowing tracts:
Ist. That valuable Island known as the ''Lower
Stump Creek Island," containing C acres ar.d 93
perches; situated ir. the Allegheny river, at the
motiln of the Clarion river. On this island a der
rick was erected iri the spring o! 1861. and an en
gine placed on the ground, but the war breaking
out fhc parties sold off and enlisted.
2J. The "Upper Stump Creek Island," situated
but a lew rods above the Lower island, containing
4 acres and 20 perches, four acres of which are own
ed by this Company, on which are erected a house,
stable, &c.
Neither of these fslan is is liable to overflow, and
both are well pro'ected by stones and trees ag.inst
washing. By reference toithe map of Pennsylva
nia, it will be observed that the Clarion river emp
ties into the Ailegneny at a point due South fiorn
Oil Creek, and as oil is found at Freepor', on this
line further South, we have every reason to believe
that these islands are in the very centre of the great
Oil Belt of Pennsylvania. Besides all this they lie
far below the Coal Measures.
The Company also own? one acre and sixty-one
perches of land, about miles above the Upper
Isiaud, at the month of Ritchey Run, near tbe town
of Emlenton, Venango county, Pa., upon which is
the celebrated Fox and Vv'idel weil, with new en
gines, derriek, &c., and the well
is bored to the depth of 420 teet. This well was
tubed at 350 feet. a.id in a fewbouia pumping yield
ed about one barrel of oi!; but the proprietors de
termined to sink it deeper, and the company will,
as soon as possible, sink this weil if necessary, to
the depth of 1000 leet or more. The "Stump isl-j
and Company" own the WHOLE of this well, fixtures j
and land, and tbe "Development Fund" will be am-!
ply sufficient to complete this well, and sink othere
in the island. There is besides, room enough on
the Ritchey Run tract for several more wells.
The property owned by this Company is all prac
tical boring territory, and persons acquainted with
tbe lands along the Allegheny and other oil streams
will bear witness that we have more practiral bor
ing surface than many of the 300 acre tracts con
tain. In addition to this, our basis will compare
favorably witb the laige majority of Companies
whose capital stock is five times as great.
The services of an efficient Superintendent have
been obtained, and the Directors ate determined to
prosecute operations vigorottsly. Persons desirous;
of securing a portion of the 21,000 shares of stock ;
must apply soon, to Hon. S. L. RUSSELL. Bedford, j
