The works at Humes' lilufi r very lorim-1
able. There art fourteen ol the heaviest land j
f mounted 8 andlO inch, and 7.1 inch rifled t
ucf) with unimunitivn enough to lust a .ong j
As the gun carriages might again fall into
ae hands of the enemy, I had them burnt,
lew up the magazine, and destroyed the works
enerall- I also burnt up the encampments,
rhich were permanently and remarkably well
onitructed, looking as if the rebels intended to
tn there some time.
These works and encampments covered many
en* of ground, und the fortifications and the
ifle pits proper ol H nines' Blufl, extend about
, mile and a quarter.
Such a net work of dafensss I never saw.
le rebels were a year constructing them, and
11 were rendered useless in an hour. As soon
$ I got through with the destruction of the
wgazinc and other works, I started Lieuten
mt Commanding Walker up the Yazoo River
irith ft sufficient force to destroy all the enemy's
property in that direction, with orders to pro
aed as fur as Yazoo City, where the rebels have
i navv yard and store houses. In the mean
time General Grant has already invested Vieks
burg, an< i ' ms possession of the best comman
ding points.
In a very short time a general assault will be
pads, when I hope to announce that Vicks
barg has fullen after a 3eries of the most bril
liant success that ever attended any army.
There has never been a case during the war
when the rebels have been so successfully beat
eo at all points, and the patience and endurance
shown by our Army and Navy, for BO ntaay
months is about to be rewarded.
It is a mere question of a few hours, and
•thm with the exception of Port Iluds n, which
will follow Vitksburg, the il;B3issippi will be
-[*a its entire length.
