BEDFORD GAZETTE. B. PST\AEYERB, EDITOR. KRIDAY, : i I I t I : . OCTOBER 17, 1862. RESULT OF THE ELECTION. The returns of the elections held on Tuesday last, so far as received, indicate heavy Demo cratic gains, except in the large cities, where the merchants and others Who have government 'contracts and the administration officials con trol public sentiment. The vote oh the state tickets is close and thO majority will not bo very much for the successful party whichever that may be. The Democrats have certainly gained a number of Congressmen and members of the legislature, in the rural districts. The revolu tion in pulic sentiment has just set in and by next year we may expect the utter annihilation of Abolitionism in Pennsylvania. The defeat of Edward McPherson, the Abo lition candidate for congress, in this district, is a consummation for which every patriot will be heartily thankful. With a majority of 3,000 to overcome, the Democratic candidate has been successful. This is glory enough for us, 110 mat ter how the state has gone. * The contest for Senator is also very close. The republican majority in the district is usu ally about 2500. We think Judge Noble's chances for election are good. His majority in this county is about 750. As for old mother Bedford, she has covered herself all over with glory. What shall we say, nay, what can we say, to do justice to the no ble and gallant men of St. Clair, Harrison, the two Woodbearics, Juniata, Napier, Cumberland / Valley, Colcrain, Southampton, Londonderry, ! Liberty, Union, Bedford, and even the two l'ruv-, idences 1 We cannot find words to express Our gratitude for the vote they have given us. To the generous and honest men who hitherto be longed to the Republican organization, who step ped forward and helped to bear up the conserva tive standard, we return our hearty thanks in behalf of the Democracy. They have shown themselves equal to the emergency and they shall ever be held in grateful remembrance for their magnanimous conduct. Bedford county is fixed forever on the side of the Union and the Constitution. yyFTna Andy Crisman presided over a meet ing to resist the draft! That's the question. SERIFS OF SERMONS BY THE PASTOR OF THE M. E. CHURCH. —It was stated by the Rev. Mr. Kepler, last Sabbath, that he would resume the ■great subject which he is now illustrating in a series of discourses, next Sabbath morning, at the usual hour of public worship. It is under stood, that the special theme for the coming Sabbath, will be the Exaltation of Christ; its Necessity and t ts Nature. The text on which these several sermons have been, and from inti mations given, are yet to be founded, is Philip pians 2 ch., s—ll vs. THE REBELS AT CAIIMBERSBURG ! —On Friday last about 3000 rebel cavalry took possession of Chambersburg, burned the Government stores and drove off all the horses they could find.— We arc sorry to hear that our townsman Mr. Geo. Blymire, lost a large lot of goods which were stored for trans-shipment at Chambersburg. The rebels escaped across the Potomac without losing a man. — PIED— SMITH —At his residence, in Southampton tp., December 2, 1861, James Smith aged 79 years, 3 months and 29 days.
