Pennsylvania Hospital. (FROM OFFICIAL HOSPITAL RETORTS.) MAY 19, 1860 Ellen S., set. 28, single, never was very etiong. Two years ago sbe had an attack of acute rheumatism, from which sho was confined to her bed for two weeks, and subsequently from a relapse for four more. She has been well ainct then fill last Saturday ; while engaged in house-cleaning she took cold, had pain in her back, felt cold but had no decided chill. Two days later her ankles began to swell, which was followed by swelling of the knee joints and of the hands. She has now dull pain in her shoulders, and hor knuckles are very fender, red and painful ; both hands aie uffected, but the right is most so. This, then, is a case ol . acute rheumatism, or, as it is now fashionably call ed, rheumatic lever. It is a well marked typical case. Wo will carefully watch the case, and from time to time call your attention to the various symptoms which present themselves. My chief abject in bringing her before you now, is to call your attention to a remedy which has recently been leeommended in the treatment ol rheumatism. 1 inesn piopylamine. Dr. Awenarins, of St. Peters buig, recommends it in the highest terms, having derived great benefit lrom its ns# in 250 cases which nme under his care. Vaiious commendatory tes timonials respecting it have appeared in our jour nals, and I propose therefore to give it another trial. 1 must ennfesss 1 am always incredulous as to the worth of new remedies, which aie vaunted as spe cifics; but this comes to us recommended so highly, that we aie bound to give it a trial. SAME CASE FOUR DAYS LATER! MAY 23, 18C0.—I will now exhibit jo you the pa tient for whom I prescribed Piopylsmine, and who was then laboring under an attack of acute rheuma tism. She hau steadily takpn it in doseg of three grains, every two hours, (intermitting it at night). The day after you saw her, 1 found her mucb moie comfortable, better than she expected to be for a week or more, judging from her other attack. (The patient now walked into the room.) The improve. 0, ment has steadily progressed, and you cannot fail to ootice a marked change in the appearance of her joints, which are now nearly of their natural size. Thus far our experiment would have seemed very iiicressfuil; but gentlemen, we must wait a tittle while before we car. give a decided opinion as to what is to be the result. * Here is another patient who -was placed on the use of the same medicine on Sunday last; she has long been suffering from chronic rheumatism, and 1 found her at that time with an acute attack super vening upon her chronic ullectior,. The wrists and knuckles were much swollen and tense. She took the chloride of propylamine in three grain doses every two hours, and you will perceive that the swelling of the joints has much diminished. THREE DAYS LATER !! MAY 26, 1860.—TLis is the case o! acute rheum at'sm treated with first of those to which I called your attention flßpr last clinic. She is still very comfortable, and it now taking three grains thrice daily.* In this case it has seemed to be followed by very satisfactory results. The second case to which your attehtion was called at our last lecture, has also continued to do well. 1 will now bring befoie you a very characteristic caseot acute rheumatism, and if the result bs satisfactory, I think, as good, jurymen, tot shall justly render our verdict in favor propylamine. He is a seaman, rat. 26, who was admitted a few days ago. Has had occasional rheumatic pains, but not so at to keep his bed, until eight days ago. The paint began in his right knee, subsequently afterted the left knee, and later, of the upper ex tremities. These joints are all swollen tense and tender. His tongue is furred; skin, at present, dry, though there has been much sweating. His pulse is full and strong, and rbout 90, He has now used props lamina for twenty-four hours. This gentleman is what may be called a strictly typical case of acate rheumatism. There was ex posure to cold and wet, and this exposure is follow ed by a feeling of coldness, severe articular pain, beginning as it usually docs, in the lower joints. There is fever and the profuse sweating, so gener ally attendant on acute rheumatism. I did not bring this patient before you with the intention of giving you a lecture on all the points connected with rheumatism, but to again give a tn al to the new remedy we are testing, and to exhibit 1o you this typical case, as 1 have called it, than which there could not be a fairer opportunity tor testing the medicine in question. We are, there fere, avoiding the use of all other medicines, even g anodynes, that there may be no misgivings as to which was the efficient remedy. You shall see the caw at a future clinic. THE RESULT. A FAVORABLE VERDICT. JUNR 9, IB6o.— The next of our convalescei T is the case of acute rheumatism before you at onr tim id Of May 26tb, which I then called a typical case, end which it was remarked was a fair opportunity for testing the worth of our new remedy. It was therefore steadily given in three grain doses every two hoors for four days. The patient has got ulong very nicely, and is now able to walk about, us you Me. Ido not hesitate to say that I have never seen as severe a ease of acute rheumatism so toon restored to health ae this man hoe been, and without leing pre pared to decide positively as to the value of the reme dy we have used, I feel bound to state that in the cases in which we have tried the Chloride of Propylamine, the patients have regained their health much earlier than under the treatment ordinarily pursued. J wish, gentlemen, you would yourselves try it, end report the results. Foa a fall report of which the above is a can denied extract, sec the Philadelphia Medical and fiurgteal Repmrttr. Sick Headache and Want of Jlppelite, Inciden tal to Soldiers. Those feelings which so sadden us, usually arise from trouble or annoyances, obstructed perspiration, or eating and drinking whatever is unwholesome; thus disturbing the healthful action of the liver and stomach. These organs must be relieved, if you desire to be well. The Pills, taking according to the printed instructions, will quickly produce a healthy action in both liver and stomach, and as a natural consequence a clear head and good appetite. Weakness or Debility Induced by over Fatigue. Will soon disappear by the use of these invalua ble Pills, and the Soldiei will quickly acquire addi tional strength. Never let the Bowels be either confined or unduly Hcted upon. It may seem strange that Hollowav's Pills should bo recommended for Dysentery and Flux, many persons supposing that tuey wouiri increase the relaxation. This is a great mistake, for these Pills will correct the liver and stomach and thus remove all the acrid humors'from the system. This medicine will give tone and vig or to the whole organic system however deranged, while health and strength follow as a matter of course. Nothing will stop the relaxation of tne Bowels so sure as this famous medicine. Volunteers attention ! Indiscretions of Youth 1 Sores and Ulcers, Blotches and Swellings, can with certainty be radically cured if the Pills are ta ken night and morning, and the Ointment be freely used as stated in the printed instructions.
