Penasylvania Hospital. (FROM OFFICIAL HOSPITAL REPORTS.) MAY 19, 1860.— Ellea S., ®T. £B, single, never WSS very strong. Two years argo she bad an attack of acute rheumatism, from which she was confined to her lied for two weeks, and subsequently from a relapse for four more. She has been well sinct then till last Saturday ; while engaged in honse-cleamng she took cold, had piinin her back, felt cold but had no decided chill. Two days later her ankles began to swell, which was followed by swelling of the knee joints and of the hands. She has now dull pain in her shoulders, and her knuckles are very tender, red and painful ; both hands are affected, but the right is most so. This, then, is a case oi aotite rheumatism, or, us it is now fashionably call ed, rheumatic lever. It is a well marked typical case. We Will carefStly watch the case, and from time to time call your attention to the various symptoms which piesent THEMSELVES. My chief ediject in bringing her before you now, is to call your attention to a remedy which has recently been recommended in the treatment ot rheumatism. 1 mean propylamine. Dr. Awenariiis, of 8?. Peters burg, recommends it in tbe highest terms, having derived greot benefit Iron its use in 250 cases which came under his care. Various com nendatory tes timonia's respecting it have appeared in our jour nals, and I propose therefore to give it another trial. I must ennfesss I am always incredulous as to the worth of new remedies, which aie vaunted as SPE CIFICS! but this comes to us recommended so highly, that WE* ate bound to give it a trial. SAME JASP FOUR A YS L\TER! MAY 2.1, 1860.—1 will now exhibit jo you the pa tient for whom I prescribed Propylamine, and who was then laboring under an attack of acute rheuma tism. She has steadily taken it in dose# of thme grains, every two hours, (intermitting it ct night). The day after you saw her, 1 found her much moie ■comfortable, better than she expected to he for a week or more, judging from herotber attack. (The patient now walked into the room.) The improve merit has steadily progressed, and you cannot fail to notice a marked change in the appaarance of her joints, which arc now nearly of their natural size. Thus far our experiment would have seemed very* successful! ; but gentlemen, we must wait A little while before we car. give a decided opinion A9 to what is to be the result. Here is another patient who was placed on tho use of the same medicine on Sunday last ; she has long been suffering fiom chronic rheumatism, and I ! fonnd her at that time with an acute attack super- ' vening upon her chronic affection. The wristl and knuckles were much swollen and tense. She took the chloride of propylamine in three grain doses every two hours, and ydu wili perceive thnt the swelling of tbe joints has much diminished. THREE DAYS LATER!! MAY 28, IB6o.— This is the case or acute rheum atism treated with propylamine, the first of those to which I called your attention at our LAST clinic. She I is still very comfortable, and it now taking three I grains thrice daily. In this case it has seemed to be followed by very satisfactory results. The second case to which your altehtion was called at our last'lecture, has also continued to do well. 1 will now bring befoie you a very characteristic caseot acute rheumatism, and if tbe rostiit be satisfactory, I think, as good jurymen, we shall justly render our verdict m favor propylamine. He is a seaman, ait. 26, who wns admitted A few DAYS ago. LL.is had occasional rheumatic pains, but not so as to keep his bed, until eight day 9 ago. The pains began in his right knee, subsequently affected the left knee, and later, the joints of the upper ex tremities. These joints are all swollen tense and tender. Uis tongue is furred; skin, at present, dry, though there has been much sweating. Hi, pulse is full and strong, and I bout 90, He has now used props famine lor twenty-four hours. This gentleman is what may be called a strictly typical case of acuto rheumatism. There was ex posure to cold and wet, and this exposure IS follow ed by a feeling of coldness, severe articular pain, beginning as it usually does, in the lower joints. THre is fever ar.d the profuse sweating, so gener ally attendant on acute rheumatism. I did not bring this patient before yon with the intention of giving you a lectuie on all the points connected with rheumatism, but to again give a tu a! to the new remedy we are testing, and to exhibit to yon ibis typical case, as 1 have called it, than which there could not lie a fairer opportunity tor testing the medicine in question. We are, there fore, avoiding the use of all ether medicines, even ANODYNE*, that there may be no misgivings as to which was the efficient remddy. You shall see the -case at a tutors clinic. THE RESULT. A FAVORABLE VERDICT. U;NB*9, IB6o.— The next of our convalescents is the case of acute rheumatism before you at onr clin ic of May 26th, which 1 then clled a typical case, and whith it was remarked was a fair opportunity for testing the worth of our new remedy. It w„s therefore steadily given in three grain doses every two hours for four days. The patient has got along very nicely, ar, I is now able to walk about, us you see. Ido not hesitate to say that I have never seen at severe a case of aeiite rheumatism so soon restored to health as this man has hern, and without Ising pre parer! to decide positively as to the value of the rrme dfj toe have used, I feed hound to state that in the eases in whirh we have tried the Chloride of Propylamine, the patients have regained their health much earlier than yuder the treatment ordinarily pursued. I wish, gentlemen, you would yourselves try it, and report tbe results. Forainll report of which the above is a con dcrsad extract, see the Philadelphia Medical and fi: gsrot Reporter, it is the report Ifter a fair trial s 'he bast medyal authority in this country, and :aes it unnecessary to give numerous certificates from astonished doctors and rejoicing putieats.
