(FROM OIPICIAL HOSI-ITAL RUI-JETS.)
MAY 19, 18C0.—Ellen S., ®t. £S, tingle, never
was very strong. Two yearo ago she bad an attack
of acute rheumatism, from which eho was confined
to her be* for two weeks, and subsequently from a
relapse for four mere. She has been well suict then i
litj last Saturday } while engaged in house-cleaning
she took cold, hail ptio in her back, felt cold but
had no decided chill. Two days later her ankle*
I began to swell, which was followed by swelling of
the knee joints air of th hands. She has now dull
pain in her shoulders, and her knuckles are very
tender, re,i and painful ; both bands are :.sccied,
but the right is most so. This, then, is a case ot
acute rheuma'ism, or, a* it is now fashionably, call
ed, rheumatic lever. It is a well marked rypicai
case. We will carefu'ly watch the case, and from
time to tittle call your attention to the various
symptoms which piesent themselves. My chief
object in bringing Iter before you RO.V, IS to cat!
your attention to a remedy which has recently been
recommended in the treatment ot rheumatism. 1
mean propylamine. Dr. Awenarins, Of St. Pntt rs
burg, recommends if in the highest terms, having
derived great benefit Iroui its use in 2-30 cases which
came under his care. Various com nenJitory tfts
timonia's respeetiag it have appeaed in our jour
nals, and I propose therefore to give it another trial.
I must confess* lam always incredulous a to ine
worth of new remedies, which aie vaunted as spe
cifics; but thiscomes to us recommended so highly,
that we are bound to give it a trial.
SAME CASE FOUR DAYS LATER!
MAY 23, 1650.—1 wi iitcw exhibit jo vou the p i
tient for who n I prescribed Propylamine, and who
was then laboring under an attack of acute rheuma
tism. She has steadily taken it in doses of three
grains, every two hours, (intermitting i' at night),
lit" day alter you saw her, 1 found he' much nioie
comfortable, better thsn she expected to be for n
week or more, judging from her other attack. ( ; n<?
patient now walked into the room.) in. yjiprove
merit has steadily progressed, and you cannot fail to
notice a maiked change in the appearance of tier
joints, which are now nearly of their natural size,
l'hus far our experiment would have seemed re: J
mccessl'uil ; but gentlemen, we rriu-t 'wait a liti.e
while be for 5 we car. give a decided opinion as to
what is to be the result.
IP-re is another p itier.t who was placet! on the
use of the same medicine on Sunday Jaf; she has
long been suffering from chronic rheumatism, and i
lotuid her at that time with an acute nftark sum?r
venirig upon her chronic nfL-eiion. The-'.v. ta and
knuckles were mu. !i swollen and tense. Sr. took
the chloride of propylamine in three grain doses
every two hours, and you will p rce.ve that the
swelling of the joints has much diminished.
THREE DAYS LATER!!
MAY 26, ISso.—This is the case o: acntn rheum
atism I mated •nib propylamine, th-first of the: To
which I called your attention at our la-t clinic. S a
i< s'iii vejy comfortable, and is now taking three
grains thrice daily.
Iri this case it has seemed lo be fo'.'o.ve I by v, ry
sitisfactory results. The second c se to w.drh
your attehi ion was c died at our ijst lecture bus
also continued lo do welt. I wi.l now br:ng bei'oiu
you i very characteristic case of acute rheuiuat s r.,
and if Ibe resit t ii: satisfactory, I as -J I
jurym v , ire shall ji/stfj render our v.rd-rt ft facer
if propylamine.
