Pennsylvania Hospital. (FEOM OFFICIAL HOSPITAL REPORTS.) MAT 19, IB6o. —Ellen S., set. 28, single, never was very strong. Two years ago she bad an attack of acute rheumatism, from which she was confined to her be" l for two weeks, and subsequently from a relapse for four more. She has been well since then till last Saturday ; -while engaged she took cold, had p.iin in her back, but bad no decided chill. Two days later began to swell, which was followed by the knee joints anr of the bands. She has now pain in her shoulders, and her knuckles are , tender, red and pairifttl ; both bands are affected, hut the right is moßt so. This, then, is a case ot acute rbeuma'ism, or, as it ii now fashionably call ed, rheumatic lever. It is a well marked typical case. We will carefully watch the case, and from timp to time call your attention to the various symptoms present themselves. My chief object in bringing her hefo.e you now, is to call your attention to a remedy which has recently been recommended in the treatment of rheumatism. I mean propylamine. Dr. Awenarius, of St. Peters burg, recommends it in the highest terms, having delived great benefit from its use in 230 cases which cejne under his care. Various com nendatory tes timonia's respecting it have appeared in our jour nals, and I propose therefore to give it another triaf. 1 must Confesss 1 atn always incredulous as to the worth of new remedies, which aie vaunted as spe cifics; bot this comes to us reeommefffltttKo highly, that we are bound to give it a trial. ,r SAME CASE FOUR DAYS LXTER: MAY 23, 1860.—1 will .now exhibit fo you the pt tient for whom I prescribed Propylamine, and who was then laboring under an attack of acute rheuma tism. She has steadily taken it in doses ol three, grains, every two hours, (intermitting it at nigttt). The day after you saw her, 1 found her muoh more, comfortable, better than she expected to be lor a week or more, judging from her other hi he patient now walked into the room.) The it ment has steadily progressed, and you eaunot notice a marked change in the appearance of fi'er joints, which are now nearly of their natural sice. Thus far our experiment would have seemeti very successful! ; but gentlemen, we mu-t wait a little while before we car. give a decided opinion as to' what is to be the result. Here is another patient who was placed on the use of the same medicine on Sunday last; shg. has long been suffering Crow chronic and 1 found her at that time with an acute attack soper vening upon her chrataic affection. The-wrists and knuckles were muchkwollen and tense. She took the cMtgte of piopwamuie in three grai.xdoses hours, ad# you will perceive thai the the jointsfchs much diminished' THREE D \YS L.VTER!. MAjNilij 1860.—This is the casc o: acute rheum atism treated- with propylamine; the first of those to yifci&h dfeaWed'your attention at our lat{2B, who was admitted a few d.iys ago. His had occasional rheumatic pains, hut not so as to keep his bed, until eight days ago. The pains began in his right knee, subsequently affected the left knee, and ffco joints of the upper ex tremities. These joiats are all swollen tense and tender. His tongue is furred; skin, at present, dry, though there has beeD much sweating. His pirlse is full and strong, and t bout 90, He has now used propslamine tor twenty-loui hours. This gentleman is What may be caiied a strictly typical cose of acute rheumatism. There was ex posure to cold and wet, and this exposure s follow ed bv a feeling of coldness, severe articular pain, beginning as it usually does, in the lower joints.
