(FROM OFFICIAL HOSPITAL REPORTS.)
MAY 19, 1860.—Ellen S., :ct. 23, single, never
was very stiong. Two yeara ago she bad an attack
of acute rheumatism, liom which she was confined
to her be 4 for two weeks, and subsequently from a
relapse for four more. She has been well sinct then
till last Saturday ; while engaged in house-cleaning
she took cold, had p lin in. her back, felt cold but
had no decided chill. Two days later her ankles
began to swell, which was followed by swelling of j
the knee joints anr of the bands. 4jhe has now dull
pain in her shoulders, and ber knuckles are very
tender, red and painful ; both hands are affected,
but the right is most so. This, then, is a case ot
acute rheuma'isra, or, as it is now fashionably call
ed, rheumatic lever. It is a wall marked typical
case. We will carefudy watch the case, and from
time to time call your attention to the various
symptoms which piesent themselves. My chief
object in bringing her before you now, is to call
your attention to a remedy which has recently beeu
recommended ir. the treatment ot rheumatism. 1
mean propylamine. Dr. Awenariu3, of St. Peters
burg, recommends it in tbe highest terms, having
derived great benefit Irom its use in 250 cases which
came under his care. Various commendatory tes
timonials respecting it have appeared in our jour
nals, and 1 propose therefore to give it another trial.
1 must confesss 1 am always incredulous as to the
worth of new remedies, which ate vaunted as spe
cifics ; but this comes to us recommended so highly,
that we are bound to give it a trial.
SAME CASE FOUR DAYS LVTER!
MAY 23, 1860.—1 will now exhibit jo you the pa
tiert for whom I prescribed Propylamine, and who
j was then laboring under an attack of acute rheuma
tism. She has steadily taken it in doses of three
; grains, every two honrs, (intermitting it at night).
! The day after you saw her, 1 foonuß
i comfortable, better than she expected
! week or more, judging from her other
patient now walked into the room.) The inn),
ment has steadilv progressed, and you cannot fait
notice a marked change in the appearance of her
joints, which are now nearly of their natural size.
Thus far our experiment would have seemed very
mccessfnil ; but gentlemen, we must wait a little
while before we car. give a decided opinion as to
what is to be the result.
Here is another patient who was placed on the
use of the same medicine on Sunday last; she has
long been suffering fjom chronic rheumatism, and i
found her at that time with an acute attack super
vening upon her chronic affection. The-wrisU and
knuckles were much swollen and tense. She took
the chloride ©1 propylamine in three grai.r dose*
every two hours, and you will perceive that the
swel.ing of the joints has much diminished.
THREE DAYS LATER!!
MAY 26, 1860 This is the case o: acute rheum
atism treated with propylamine, the first of those to
which I called your attention at our last clinic. Sue
is still very comfortable, and is now taking three
. grains thrice daily.
In this case it has seemed to be foi'owed by very
satisfactory results. The second case to which
your attehtion was called at our las: lecture, has
also continued to do well. 1 wi,l now bring before
you a very characteristic case oi acute rheumatism,
and if the result be satisfactory, I think, as good
jurymen , we shall justly render our verdict in favor
i r f propylamine.
1 He is a seaman, set. 26, who was admitted a few
d '>'B ago. His bad occasional rheumatic pains, but
not so as to keep his bed, until eight days ago. The
p?ii;s began in his right knee, subsequently affected
the left knee, and later, the joints of the upper ex
tremities. These joints are ail swollen tense and
tender. His tongue is-f urred j skin, at present,
dr\-, though tbeie has been much sweating. His
5 pulse is full and strong, and r bout 90, He has now
I used propslamine for twenty-four hours.
This gentleman is what may be called a strictly
typical case of acute rheumatism There was ex
posure to cold and wet, and this exposure ; s follow
ed by a feeling of coldness, severe articuiai pain,
beginning as it usually does, in the lower joints.
There is fevet and the profuse sweating, so gener
ally attendant on acute rheumatism.
I did not bring this patient before you with the
intention of giving you a lect ire.ou all the paints
j connected witn rheumatism, but to again give ati i
| a! to the new remedy we are fe-ting, and to exhibit
> to you Ibis typical case, as 1 have called it, than
which there could not be a iairer opportunity lor
| testing the medicine in question. We are, there
i fore, avoiding the use oi all other medicines, even
j anodynes, that there may be no misgivings as to
which was the efficient remedy. You shall see the
case at a tn?u,e clinic.
THE RESULT.
A FAVORABLE VERDICT.
JUNK 9, 1860.—The next of our convalescents is
the case of acute rheumatism before you at our clin
ic of .May 2Sth, which 1 then called a typical case,
and which it wa3 remarked was a fair opportunity
for testing the worth of our new remedy. It was
therefore steadily given in-three grain doses every
two hours lor foui days. The patient has got along
very nicely, and is now able to walk about. s you
see. Ido no' hesitate to say thai I have never seen,
as severe a case of acute rheumatism so soon restored
to health as this man has been, and without being pre
j pared to decide positively as to the value of the reme
dy w have used, I feed bound to state that in the cases
I in which we have tried the Chloride of Propylamine,
I the patients have regained their health much earlier
than under tlu treatment ordinarily pursued. I Wish,
. gentlemen, you would yourselves try it, and report
j the results.
For a fnll report of which the above is a con
; densed extract, see the Philadelphia Medical and
j Surgical Reporter, it is the report tfter a fair trial
by the best medical authority in this country, and
makes it unnecessary to give numerous certificates
: from astonished doctors and rejoicing patieuts.
