M., to continue in session till Saturday noon. Lectures will be delivered by the following persons,on subjects opposite their respec tive names. Prof. J. W. Dickerson.—Theory and Prac tice of Teaching. George Sigafoos, Co. Sept.,—Responsibilities of Teachers. Prof. C. H. Gere, The Coming Educator, and his Work. John Palmer, Science—lt3 Influence on the History of the Worid. J. G. Clarkson.—Common Schools. S. H. Tate. H. W. Fisher. Essays will be read oy the following persons: D. M. Wonders, E. F. Rarnet, E F. Kerr, J C. Geyer, John Kinsel, J. E. Satterfi.ld, T. B. Cessna, Wilson Sparks, C. P. Calhoun, Unah Blackburn, J. A De Forest, S. Geisler, Chas. Long, A. Cwber, Misses S. E. Montgomery, L. C. Arnold, E. P. Blackburn, Mollie Tobias, S. E. Younkin, H. Evans, M. E. Allison, and M. A. Williams. The following 6Ubj-cts have been suggested as proper ones for discussion during the sessions of the Association : The best methods of conducting Teachers, Institutes. Ought corporal punishment to be prohibited in the Common Schools by law ? Ought the teacher to be responsible for the conduct if his pupils, on their way to and from school ? What degree of scholarship should entitle the teacher to a Professional Certificate? Are school exhibitions, as now conducted in this county, beneficial? How can a uniform and reliable standard ol professional attainment be secured throughout the State? Is the system of taxation for school pur poses, now established by law, just? Does the teacher exert a greater influence in forming the character of his pupils lhan the parent? Should the right of suffrage be granted to persons unable to read and write 1 Should the parent be compelled by law to educate his children? Should physical training be made a part of common school education# Is six hours too long for the school day ? Ought pupils to be required to study out of school 3 Teachers from all sections of the c-'Unty are earnest!) 7 requested to be present. As the School Department has instructed County Superii indents to make it incumbent upon all applicants for first class certificates, to attend teachers' institutes, interest alone should de mand their presence. But duty, and the in terests of their profession require of them, that they atteud this important gatheiing of teach ers. Let this be the best Institute ever held in Bedford County; and we know that we have the material to make it such. Let none re train at home. Arrangements will be made, as heretofore, for the entertainment of teachers while attend ing ihe Institute. J. GILBERT FISHER, Chairman Business Committee. Bedford, Nov. 26th IS6I. THE PROGRAMME. At the request of the Chairman of the Busi ness Committee, we, to-day, re-publish the irogramme for the annual meeting of the Bed ord co. Teachers' Association. We hope that very teacher will read it, and that those whose names occur on it as lecturers or essayists, will ,ome fully prepared to perlorm the several du ies assigned therm L"t no one, who has been placed on duty, remain away. We hear good eports from the teachers of the different dis tricts of the county, and anticipate an interes ting meeting. The programme is a good one, and the subjects for discussion are full of inter est. We hope that the teachers will prepare themselves on the latter, and thus make the sessions ol the Association both interesting and profitable. The deteriorating influence which the war, no doubt, exerts on all educational matters, should induce those who are now standing on the watch-towers of Education, to labor the harder and more incessantly to keep up a deep feeling of interest in the cause which they have espoused. Let the teachers remember this; and let there be such a gathering of them at the time and place designated, in the programme, as shall astonish the "oldest inhabitant." S. S. tnr"The teachers of Bedford tp. met at the Boydstown school house, on Saturday, Dec. 7th and organized a Township Institute. The fol lowing officers were elected: Pres. John G. Fisher, Vice Pres. John Getty, Sec. John Biy anire, Critic, H. W. Fisher. The Institute will meet again on Saturday, Dec 21st, at Fetter's school house. Subject for discussion : Should the parent be compelled by law to educate his children ? S. Geisler was appointed to report on Penmanship. ! /CONFECTIONARY ■ AND GROCERY.
