(FROM OFFICIAL HOSPITAL REPORTS.) MAY 19, IB6o.—Ellen S., ret. 29, single, never | was very strong. Two year# ago she bad an attack I of acute rheumatism, from which she was confined ; to her bed for two weeks, and subsequently from a relapse for lour more. She has been welfsinci then till last Saturday ; while engaged in house-cleaning she took cold, had pun in her back, felt cold but bad r.o decided chill. Two days liter her ankles began to swell, which was followed by swelling of the knee joints a:ir of the hands. She has now dull pain in her shoulders, and her knuckles are very tender, red and painful; both hands are affected, but the right is most so. This, then, is a case ot I acute rheumatism, or, as it is now fashionably cnll j -ed, rheumatic lever. It is a well marked typical , case. We will carefully watch the case, and from j time to time call your attention to the various symptoms which piesent themselves. My cbiel ! object in bringing her before you now, is to call | your attention to a remedy which has recently been I recommended in the treatment ot rheumatism. J ! mean propylamine. Dr. Awenarius, of St. Peters ! burg, recommends it in tbe highest terms, having { derived great benefit from its use in 250 cases which j came under his care. Various com n -nda tory tes j timonials respecting it have appealed in our jour ! ' nals, and f propose therefore to give it another trial. 1 must conte-ss 1 ant always incredulous as to the worth of new remedies, which aie vaunted as spe cifics; but this comes to us recommended so highly, that we ate bound to give it a trial. SAME CASE FOUR DAYS L VTELI! MAY 23, 1860.— 1 will now exhibit jo you tbe pi i tient for whom f prescribed Propylamine, and who j was then laboring under an attack of acute rheuma | tisrn. She nas steadily taken it in doses of three ! grains, every two hours, (intermitting it at night), i 1 he day after you saw her, 1 found her much tnore ; comfortable, better than she expected to be for a i week or more." judging from her other attack. (The • patient now walked into the room.) The improve j ment has steadily progressed, and you cannot fail to ■ notice a marked change in the appearance of her joints, which are now nearly of their natural size. , I thus far our experiment would have seemeo very j successful! ; but gentlemen, we must wait a little while before we car. give a decided opinion as to j what is to be the result. Here is another patient who was placed on the use of the same medicine on Sunday last; she has long been suffering ftom rhronie rheumatism, and I found her at that time with an acute attack super - j vening upon tier ctironic affection. Tile-wrists and knuckles were much swollen and tense. She took j ttse chloride of propylamine in three grain doses | every two hours, and you wilt perceive that the i swelling of the joints has much diminished. THREE DAYS LATER!! MAY 25, ISs9—This is the case o: acute rhenm ! atism treated with propylamine, the first ot those to , which I called your attention at our last clinic. She j is still very comfortable, and it now taking tbree ! grains thrice daily. In this case it has seemed to be followed by very | satisfactory results. The second case to which your attehtion was called at our last lecture, has I also continued to do well. ' 1 will now bring befoie you a very characteristic caseot acute rheumatism, and if the resu.t be satisfactory, I think, at pool jurymen , tee shall justly rentier our verdict in furor rf propylamine. He is a seaman, ret. 26, who was admitted a few days ago. HJS bad occasional rheumatic pains, but not so as to keep his bed, until eight days ago. The pains began in his right knee, subsequently affected l tie lelt Kr.ee, and later, the joints of the upp rt r ex tremities. These joints are all swollen tense and tender. His tongue is furred: skin, at present, | dry, though there has been much sweating. His j pulse is full and stiong, and ; bout 90, He has now j u-ed propslamine lor twenty-four hours. This gentleman is what may be cailed a strictly i lypical case of acute rheumatism. There was ex i po.-ure to cold and wet, and this exposure -s follow ed by a feeling oi coldness, severe articular pain, beginning as it usually does, in the lower joints. There is fever and the proliise sweating, so gener ally attendant on acute iheumatism. 1 did not bring this patient you with the intention of giving you a lect iie on ali the points j connected with rheumatism, but to again give a tii | al to the new remedy we are testing, and to exhibit j to you this typical case, as 1 have called it, than I which there could not be a fairer opportunity for | testing the medicine in question. We are, there j fore, avoiding the use ol ali other medicines, even j anodynes, that there may be no misgivings as to which was the efficient remedy. You shall see the case at a tuture clinic. THE RESULT. A FAVORABLE VERDICT. .li s- 9, I96o.—The next of our convalescents i I the case of acute rheumatism before you at our clin j ic of May 20th, which I then called a typical cae, j and which it was rematked was a fair opportunity tor testing the worth of our new remedy. It was therefore steadily given in three grain doses every two hours for four days. The patient lias got along very nirely, and is now able to walk about, as you see. IJo not hesitate to say that I have never seen | as severe a case op arute rheumatism so soon restored jto health us this man has Ae. *7l. and without Icing- pre* ! pared to decide positively as to the. value of the reme dy toe. hate used, I feel hound to state that in the rates in tchirk we have tried the Chloride of Propylamine, j the patients have regained their health murk earlier j than under the treatment ordinarily pursued. I wish, I gentlemen, you would yourselves try it, and report j | the results. For a fnll report of which Ihe above is a con densed extract, see the Philadelphia Mediral and \ Surgical Reporter. Jt is the leport liter a fair trial j by the best medical authority in this country, and \ makes it unnecessary to give numerous certificates ' from astonished doctors and rejoicing patients. I !
