; -THE UNION."
The greet mi-sion of the Democratic Party, which
; has ever stood as the bulwark of the USION and the
Champion ol the CONSTITUTION, renders its entire
i unity and bold attitude in this botiroi National per
il a matter ol vital concern. The pending strugg je
is not less lor the maintenance oi a United Coun
try than for the Perpetuation of Democratic Princi
ples, as expounded by JEKFKRSOX and JACKSON. f l,e
most memento s results ha..g upon the issue. Meie
party questions are for the time by common con
sent adjourned. The past is dead, save in its les
sons ol experience.
The Democratic hosts have not shrunk fiom their
full share in the responsibility £ and dangers of the
emergency. They have rallied with one accord a
round the standard of our common country. But
the occasion imposes other duties. The Govern
ment will demand and receive the willing support j
oi every patriot, in its efforts to vindicate the Na- j
tional hoi or and le-assert the National authority ;
but the Reservation of Constitutional Liberty rests ,
more with the people than with Congrcs-es and
Cabinets. Vigilance and Unity arc theiefore spe
cially requisite in the present juncture.
It is the purpose of the Proprietors to make "THE ,
I NION," in every respect a first-class Journal.— |
The Democracy ot the whole State fee' the need of ;
a bold and vigorous Metropolitan daily ; am! no ef
fort will be spared to render THE UNION both •
popular and efficient as a newspaper, and as a tear- i
less exponent of the great principles for which the j
Democratic party have ever contended, and which j
a;e now so unhappily imperilled.
The Proprietors have perfecteil such arrange
ments as vvi i place the enteiprise, from the begih- ]
ning, upon a substantial business basis, with abun- i
dam amahs to make a Newspaper second in inter- j
est and ability to no other in the city • and while I
the paper w ill be fearlessly Democratic, it will sed
ulously avoid a'l faction, as the deadliest bane to
party efficiency.
He lock to the Democratic Misses for support, I
and shall labor to make THE UNION in every way '
worthy their confidence and liberal patronage, as a j
fresh, readable and fearless Journal.
