And there they sat a-popplng corn,
John Styles and8uaan Cotter;
John Stylos was stout as any ox,
And 8usan fat as butter.
And there they sat and shelled the corn,
And raked and stirred the fire,
And talked of different kind of ears.
And hitched their chairs up ntgher, 1
Then Susan she the popper shook,
Then John he shook the popper
Till both their faces grew as red
As sauce-pans made of copper.
And then theyshelled.and popped andate,
All kinds of fdn a-poklng.
And ha haw-hawed at her remarks ,
And she laughed at his Joking.
And still they popped and still they ate
(John's mouth was like a hopper).
And stirred the fire and sprinkled salt,
And shook and shook the popper.
The clock struck nine, theolock struck ten
And still the corn kept popping;
It struck eleven and then struck twelvs,
And still no signs of stopping.
And John he ate, and Sue she thought
The corn did pop and patter.
Till John cried out, "Tho corn's a-flret
Why, Susan, what's the matter T"
Said she, "John Styles It's one o'clock ,
You'll die of Indigestion;
I'm sick of all this popping corn
Why don't you pop the question t"
TlIE RANPAOF.OIM BRAKESMAN.
Soon after the opening of the East
Tennessee and Georgia railroad, there
chanced to be traveling over the line,
in o car where there were but few pas
sencers, n gentlemen who was seated
opposite tho stove, wrapped up in his
shawl and meditation. Nip-ht came
on. Presently in bounded a brakes
man, loudly slamming the door be
hind Inn), one ot those country geni
uses, who, with a laudible ambition
had a day or two ago abandoned the
girls, the fiddle and the plow-tail, to
climb in tho world, and become
brakesman. He had been tho "king
bee" of all tho neighborhood frolics,
at the liouso raisin?;, tho corn shuck
incrs. and at tho cross roads dor?!?erv
fighting ground, and now he felt sure
that ho was a "kme bee on railroads,
Strutting up to the stove he slammed
Jown his lantern, kicked the mud from
his huge boots on the foot board of
the scat, spit tobacco mice copiously
and noisily on the hissing stove, cross
ed Ins muscular thighs, took a survey
of the aforesaid boots, with harness
leather straps, and then bethought
himself of the "customer" opposite, on
whom he proceeded to bestow a length
cned and saucy look, as though he
doubted tho customer's right to bo in
tho coach at all. At length he sought
knowledge :
" Whar are you gtiine, Mister.'
"To Daltcn sir. responded the gen
tleman.
'Preacher, ain't you ?"
"No, sir, I am not : but why do
you ask !
"Uh, nothing, only 1 thought L saw

over you like the mcasils. 1 ou know

"No, sir."
"Well, I'll i list be dam: why whar

"At ftlaryville, hast lennessee."
"Oh 1 that excuses you, for if ever

"You seem to bo well acquainted

"What place do you mean Mister

"I allude to your omce, and by the
way what is your position on the road?
"Brakesman, by the iumpin gemi-
