Rkaiuso Itoox Wo heartily endorse the
truth, that no village, however small should
be without a literary association and a library,
in which should bo deposilel newspapers,
documents relating to tho history of the coun

eral interest. The first step should bo to so

a room, tho third to form a library, to be open

debates, conversation, and business meet

SEW YORK DRT GOODS MARKET.
New York, March 21.
Dry Goods The market Is dull and week, and

However it may be with gold
stocks tho rivcra are "rising." The
Hudson, Ohio, Mississippi, and their
tributaries, suddenly unsoosed from
the icy fetters of a long and snowy
Winter, are leaping into lifcand vigor
under thestimulusof onr warm Spring
sun, and, overflowing their banks,
sweep away over the brown meadows
and bare fields until the scattered trees
and half buried forests ride like navies
at anchor in their inland seas. Wher
ever the cities have trusted too far the
constancy -of the streams which supply
their commerce, they find their streets
and wharves submerged, and the
property and lives of their people en
dangered. Owing to the many heavy
falls of snow during the past Winter,
ami the late and sudden coming of the
Spring, our Spring freshets will prob
ably be unusually high, and unless
promptly met and adequately guarded
against, they will prove seriously dis
astrous. A New York paper says : . "At a
ball up town, a few evenings ago,
some of the ladies had three ser
vants to hold up the train of their
dresses."
