Naukow Kscai'b. on Wedmsday night
hist, tho cry of "Fire" was raised, about 7
o'clock in the ' evening, and nil Waynesburg
sprung to buckets ! Dashing madly down the
street it was discovered that Hook A Wise's
Mill was on fire and thither went the bucket
brigade, pell mull. Arriving in good season,
prompt action noon subdued the liuuu'S. A
space as lug as the tly ot a marquee was
burnt out of the centre of tho root The
night was fortunately very still, and the roof
being damp, it burned slowly. These facts
and (he ready assistance rendered, prevented
what otherwise would have been a huge con
flagration, with great loss to the ow ners. The
tire originated from the friction of soie part
or the machinery near tho root'.
Many laughable incider-ls occurred. It is
alleged thalsoinu cai lied buckets witli no bot
toms, and In the hurry and excitcmcut, some
run to tho third story of the building with
empty buckets. A religious meeting at
Bridgeport was most unceremoniously scat
tered by the cry of alarm. Others who were
iutently gazing on the fire, and absorbed, per
haps, in the pleasing thought of the rivers ol
whkkry that would flow did the building
burn, fell headlong in the brook this side.
