There were some 23,300 gallons of UofinoJ
Oil produced, which. Is not embraced in the
foregoing statement. That quantity was not
bonded, the taxes having been assessed at tho
refinery. The bonded oil was transported in

taxes are paid upon its witlidraw.il.
The larger portion of the whiskey proline

Baltimore, the tax is upon which remain un

Oil and whisky are re-inspected at their
withdrawal, and a credit allowed for leakage.

a spiritiisl way. The text wis: "lam not

went In prove that the kingdom nrc.tirist ",VI"

was lo beworkcl out by soirllu il moans
alone without the aid of secular power- 'lhls
accounts we presume, for the "divinity of sla
very'' and tho grand part it is to play, or rath
er mi to, in the consummation nf Divine will.
And hence the objection in the S aith to any
interference with tho ''institution." Construe
the paying of Christ in a stiictlv literal sense
and what would tlio ntllco of religion lie
among men? But, we do not propose to dis
cuss theology as there would, no doubt, bo as
wide a difference between us as in polities.
The p arallel between himself and Paul in his
fearless advocacy of tlio .camo of Christ was
good. Faul wrote to tho It imxna, fx cvae
in person. "I) unto others as you w.iuld
lhat they shout I do unto you'' was acknowl
edged to be a "niea point" and ono upon
which he was careful not to dilate, further
than to reprimand what ho thought an un
favorable feeling against him before he was
heard. We should like to have heard him
lurtherupon this "nice point" but his christian
spirit forboro. In fact tlio sermon was con
servatlve ia the extreme, with a free and
lilicral ground whereon to base his principles
and a striking contradistinction between tho
sayings and doings of tlio sect and people ho
represents.
As we have inthuited wo would diffjr with
the Iley. Clauliton in religion and politics.
But, for all that wo nro partial to his right to
be heard. We may be censured for what w
have said concerning him, but not justly when
it is considered that all,, and more, too was
invited. Why was the meeting in tlio Court
House when there are choreics in our place,
and clergymen, that profess the same politics
ot'Hev. Caughton? Why tho absence, of
anything that would givo it the semblance of
an assemblage for worshipping Christ 1 The
matter was in tho hands of Democratic politi
cians and no ono assisted the reverend gentle
man in the pulpit. Flocks of Democrats came
in from the country as to a political gathering
and men attended whose ears are not accus
tomed to hcai the word of God. But for the
women present it would have been considered
a political meeting, as much so as if the most
rapacious Copperhead of our acquaintance
had filled the chair with the tlijhc differences
of Methodist hymns, prayer, etc. We ask.
wtiy all this unless to invite comment ? The
Rev. Claughton, certainly knows, if not, we
would have him, that we of the North differ
from the South in the fact that hero men are
not ostracised for opinion's sako. It would
certainly appear better if be would associate
with men nf his own calling, or brother lay
men. If he does not preach political sermons
he shouldn't "hang out the sign." Thus de
ceived we expected to hear him gibbet him
self with his own arguments, but be was wary
enough to forebear the risk. Let the gentle
man keep in mind the old adage lhat "evil
communications corrupt good manners" and
morals ; let him introduce himself to the peo
ple through the proper channels and he may
be assured that he will bo beard with due al
lowance for the many bcrcsys of b Is doctrine.
If not bis motives and sincerity will be ques
tioned, from the very reason that the people
will think his politics and religion won't mix
and therefore neither will he acceptable.
There is a portion of our citizens that will
object, at all times, to Democratic Mass Meet
ings on Sunday, whethor for tho furtherance
of Southern missionary projects or the Interests
of their party. '

The bill repealing the charter of

Ilava had only 210 majority in tlie

the Democracy threw their whcT
power, with Andrew Jolinson at their
head, into this Jirat election in 1868; that
thev did their utmost to get ouo fact to
Hustain their noisv clamor about Con
gress being repudiated by tho people.
Here was a test ease j it was Congress
rw Johnson ; a Congressman was to
be chosen ; the district was to say the
least very dose, and needed hut the
change of two votes in a hundred from
last October to give them tho coveted
victory. They canvassed the district
with great spirit; their new Senator
(Mr. Thurnian) led tho long list of
spenkorK, among wlvoim wtint Vallan-

cd for victory was shown by the outgtv
ings pf their leading presses.
That "great Democrat io reaction, "
which Bet iu lust summer aud fall, and
which, as we are told every day, the
present, couiwof Congress is biiro to
strengthen, received a bad sot back.
A Republican gain of over seven hun
dred votes in a single district, since,
lastOotober, is a kind of reaction which
applied to the whole State of twenty
one Congressional districts, would givo
a Republican majority of some eighteen
thousand. We aro afraid this is not
tike kind of eucourgoinent the secession
Democracy expected. Their boasted
reactiou has come suddenly to grief.
If Stanton's reinstatement, Grant's
horrible treachery, the Joeobin doings
of Congress, and the growing impii

down South, can do no moro tluvn this
to help along the great and glorious
rebel cause, then hadn't the iinterrified
