Long Trails.
There is a society of gentlemen in this
town aa well as elsewhere, whoso boun
den duty it is to trend on the trails of
ladies dresses, uow so much affected
by the ultra fashionable." Not a day
but some member of the society en
forces its rules on Main street.
We can assure the sufferers that this is
done in concert, and with a view to
the abolition of the fashion. The
Boston Pout, speculating on the long
skirt question, holds that where a gen
tleman steps on that superfluous ex
tremity ot a lady's dress which gathers
up odorous richness from the flag
stones and pavement, neither should
apologize, because the lady has
an undoubted right to cover an nn-'
limited amount of space with her
straggling dry goods,nnd the gentlemen
has an inalienable right to step in that
space, covered or uncovered. It
thinks, however, that the action is
more damaging to the lady's garments
than to the gentleman's boots.
A TorciiiNO Incident. At a
second class hotel in Frankfort, Kv., a
few days since, a little girl entered the
bar-room, andjin a pitiful tone told the
barkeeper that her mother sent her to
get eight cents.
"Eight cents !' said the barkeeper.
"Yes, sir."
"What does your mother want with
eight cents ? I don't owe her any
money."
"Well," said the child, "father
spends all his money here for rum, and
we have no bread" to-day. Mother
wants to buy a loaf of bread."
A loafer sngg.'sted to the barkeeper
to kick her out.
"No," said the barkeeper; "I'll
give her mother the money, ami if her
tttther conies back here again I'll kick
Aim out."
Humanity owes that barkeeper a
vote of thanks.
l'KEL'llEIl ON' KlSSIXO. 11. W. B.
thus speaks of his hero and heroine in
Norwood: "It was evening twilight.
They sat alone in the porch. A few
late blossoms of the Chinese honey
suckle shod down a trace of perfume
through the air. There were no lo
custs singing, no katydids, nor gurg
ling crickets, and yet some soft sounds
I certainly heard ! Not birds surely I
I think it must have been the plash of
one honeysuckle against another.
Yet there is no wind to move them !
1 hear it again ! Listen ! It is like the
falling of a drop of dew into the silver
lake from some birchen leal ! iTo,
that is rude. It is as if two dreams
filiating in the night had clashed ; or
like the joining of two nravers of love
,t ' i -i
on their wav upward ; or nav, it was
a km ! pure, sacred, holy! 'it is the
soul's symbol, when words tail it. It
is the heart s sijrti, or interjection,
when it has n feeling lor which there
is no expression !"
Ifarrinice of Wliiles mid lllnclis.
The Iiuh'nen'knt thinks, ami very
! justly, that it is a very rare circum
stance that a black person anil awhile
wish to ninrrv each other. Rut if
any two such persons do wish to mar
ry, it is impertinent and oppressive
for other people, and particularly for
legislators, to interfere. Rut it seems
that the Alabama Convention not
only proposes to prevent the making
of such marriages in the ttiture, hut to
annul all such marriages made in the
past. J his is an oversight on the part
of that convention ; fur tho number of
white and blacks who ought to be
married to one another in Alabama is
nlreadv fiir creator than the number
..: l T!,,, 1 ,.;.-
who arc so married, i he true legis-
t;nn. not the nullification, of eUell mar
riages.
Is old times, when malefactors
were broken on the wheel, it was usual
for the executioner to put the victim
out of misery by the coup da grace,
that is, a knock on the head, that sud
denly finished his earthly career. The
Ohio Democracy on the 13th inst., did
just that thing for the self-elected
martyr, Vallandighara, by nominat
ing Judge Thurman, by a vote of 51
to 24. Tribune.
Tint Cost or Livixo. On the question of
bow large a sum m:iy bs saved from a small
salary, a lady says in an exchanga ; "My In
come is $8 00 per week, which I spend in the
following manner t Board and washing, $t 25.
church contribulions, SScnts ; clolhcs $1 60.
Total tail). Tho b.iliucu $'. 50, I deposit
in the bank." A young m m raves his experi
ence thus ; "My income is$-0 a week. My
average expenses are for board and room, $ 6 60
clothing, $G UO ; billiards, $2 50 j(I play a poor
(tame)- drink i, $1 50 ihorso hire, 3 00 ; liter-
ury True Flag and l't-lice fcr.izc.lle, lu cents ;
washing, 15 ccnis;churcli contributions 5 cents;
Total, 623. For the balance I draw on the old
man. My washing biil last year wa8 4S, but
as my necessary expenses were so high, I was
not able to pay only 1 3 of it, which gives the !
average of as cenls a week. I would like to
marry, but don't see how 1 can. Tin. ladies
are so extravagant and bare so many habits,
that I can't support a wife.
A Woman Turned Man.
Tiio La Crosse Democrat tells a wonderful
yarn, for the tiutb of wliioti the editor vouches
with Munchaipen-like gravity. A Miss Ellen
Burnbam, be says, married one PowelL a
Chlcajo newspaper man, in 1802, lived with
him two years and bad one child. Suddenly
tho lady's voice began to change, bcr poachy
cheeks to sprout with whiskers, until, at the
age of twemy-one, the attractive young
woman was transformed- Into a good looking
young man. A separation was the natural eon
sequences, and, after a time, the quondam
girl vindicated ber new found sex by marrying
one uf her former pupils. As the Democrat
puts tho case, "the former girl Is now a man,
the former wife Is now a husband, the former
wife Is now a lather, the former young lady
teacher of a young lady la now that young
lady's husband."
PosTHASTEa Ksllkv, of New York, has
seized upon and detained a large number of
letters containing money addressed to tho
proprietors of gift enterprises. District Attor
