The interest and excitement over the
reinstatement of Secretary Stanton in
the War Dc;irt:nciit,i:i)il thecotir.se of
the President and General Grant, have
not abated to-day. The Intelligencer
camo out this morning; in a double
leaded editorial appealing to the people
to save the country from what is
is believed, to be threatened
revolution. The Union fllso came
out this evening with a call ueadetl
"Appalling danger to the country ; the
people must meet nnd avert it." It also
heads a call fur the meeting of National
Union Johtisoii camps. . Theec an
nouncement.", together with the course
of tho majority in Congress in atkiu?;
Secretary Stanton by'a memorial not to
resign, have caused the public feoling
to run high. The Pres. claims that he
sked General Grant if he would change
his mind in reference to the course he
would pursue if the Senate should re
fuse to nialcc'Stanton'sstispeneion Gnal,
when the lati't reiterated the proroire,
nreviouslv made, that he would either
hand in his resignation as Secretary of
ar, ocf mltnm, early enough lur tue
Prsailent to appoint his successor, or
take any othsr aetion he miht deem
requisite, or allow a mandamus to be
served upon him tor the surrender of
the oitiee, adding a promise to thn rresi
dent that he should hear from Lim on
the subject on Monday.
Gtn. Grant on being shown the
President's statement to-day, declares
that at the interview on Saturday, he
did say lis had not changed his mind,
and aho gave the President distinctly
to understand that in case he (Gen.
Grant) received from the Senate an
official notification that that body did
not concur in the reasons given by the
President for Mr. Stanton's removal,
he (Grant) would ho bound under the
tenure of office act to at once withdraw
from the War Departmeut and cease
h is d u ties as Secretary of War ad interim.
The Prcsidunt informs your corres
pondenttlmt he did not so understand
Gen. Grant. If he had known such
was his intention, he should have re
!ievd Grant at once, and placed a man
in the War Department who would
not have nivaa up to Stanton, and thus
the matter stands. The President has
issued no order yet prohibiting official
intercourse with Secretary Stanton.
General Grant and Lieut. Gen. Sher
man called on the President this
evening and had a full and freo con
ference. They both informed the Pres
ident that they had advised Mr. Stan
ton to tender his resignation, but that
the latter had given them 110 reply.
They expressed themselves in favor of
ellocting an amicable settlement of the
existing trouble, and did not doubt but
that it would be arranged.
