embraced tho importunity to visit Morgan
town. With pleasant company palliation for
miserablo roads a shoit drive and we were
there. Tho first impression of the town
viewing it front tlio western side ef tlio river
was good. The Suspension bridge, the river,
tlio residences, green fnliago, spins, whit,!
cottages, blend together in a most pietunsipie
scene. Crossing and driving down Us streets
we felt lost. Ory, dull? why Wayncslmrg is
no comparison! Tim slylit of tlio landlord
coming out to take nur higz tgo was a relief.
Wc invaded the sanctum of t lie 'o( to find
its worthy editor llolfntau poiing over proof
sheets and "yc local" nfT "In the mountain,"
perhaps in search of "items." He certainly
has a barren field in Morgnntown. Don't un
derstand us however, to say that the place is
worse than others In a business point ol view
Thcro were numerous indications that some
thing was doing. Houses we.'c being refitted.
and stores were numerous that certainly must
have customers. Wo noticed especially the
buildings now used for tho Agricultural Col
lego, recently established at this point. The
main building situated & short distance below
the town has an admirable site- in a curve of
the river and looks to bo all that could be
wished for. We refer our renders to a de
scription of this institution in another column,
and to the cards of one or two of tho live
business men of Morgnntown.
A cool, pleasant rtiive down tho river and
across brought us bai k to Greene county.
In the Oil Region wo took the lime to look
around, it being virgin soil to out feet Hav
ing hoard so much of the classic field our Im
eglnation was heightened to bava n rude fall.
Bohtown reminded us somewhat of the quick
growth developed by railroads or important
works built far from busy life. Many of the
derricks have disappeared we were told, and
what formerly looked like a haibir of ship
ping looks now like mere oil derricks. Time
nrj those, however, who still linger i.b nit the
diggings whose faith is unwavering na 1 cour
age undaunted. One new well is to go down
this fall. The Shcrmnn was pumping heavy
oil at slow rate. The Allegheny and others
were cleaning out preparatory to work. Old
est of oil men Mr. Cephas Wiley we found
at his post. Confident, he spoke of past suc
cess and future hopes with an cnllm-insm that
