Small-Pox. For the past few days the
word has been circulated that several cases of
small pox existed among the colored popula

for denying the statement. Tho disease pre

harmless chicken-pox. We tell this to revive

Town Clock. A glance at the cupola of
our really elegant Court House convinces us
of the prnclihility, and the usefulness, to say
nothing of the ornamental, such an addition
would be to the structure. Here is a caj ital
chance for ouf present Commissioners to im-
mortnlize tlicrtselves. The tour of the bell in
utter years would ring pleasantly in their ears,
and the grams of the tax-grumblers would
ring ti-plcastutly from the present down into

A Tkrriblk Evil in Oca Midst. We al
lude to the places In our Borough where spir
ituous liquors arc being sold under the name
of a "wholesale business." It is indeed a
"wholesalo business," in one sense that of
making drunkards by the wholesale, and pro
ducing a wholesale demoralization of the
community. We believe that these venders
of liquors are liable to indictment and con
viction under tho law. We have examined
the law in regard to the matter and nre satis
fied that they have no right to sell liquors in
any quantity or in any way whitevcr, under
the license which they have. Why do not
the proper officers see to the enforcement of
the law ?

A Plka to MmsTKiis. There are some
clergymen who never appear to take note of
the weather. The exercises are opened with
a five minutes' prayer, followed by the read
ing of a Psalm and a portion of tho New
Testament, singing of a six-verso long meter
hymn, the reading of th? Song of Moses, a
prayer of twenty minutes by the watch, sing
ing ol six more verses, a dull sermon of forty
fivo minutes, a four-verse hymn, another
prayer of reasonable length, nnd a few pulpit
notices, the doxology, and finally the bene
diction Now when it is remembered that
tho days arc hot, and tbn churches anything
but cool, where sex'ons clo:a doors and com
pel the nudienro to breathe twice or three
times the same atmosphere, ia it any wonder
that our thoughts are not upon heaven and

"How lovely was her anjel hrm,
Rich hair ami lustrous eyes,
A gem lo i b autifiil fur earth,
God took her to the stiles "
She early In life rought and i btained pardon
at the foot of the cross ; and by pious deport
nient proved herself to be a truly christian
character, both in principle an 1 practice.
She bore her suffering with Ilia', patience,
which always marks tho child of God.
When aware that the moment ol desolutlon
was drawing nigh, she requested that a splrilu
al adviser might ba called In, with whom,
Rev. Westfatl, she left the brightest evidence
that she was iu tho "straight and carrow
path" that leads to Immortality. After prayer
and singing she g ive her spirit back to God,
who gave it. Sleep on Sarah :
"We'll sometimes dream your pleasant

Your tones of love we'll faintly hear
Our names in sadness call.
We know that you are happy,

But our hearts are very desolate,
To thiuk that you are gone."
