were captivated by the crafts
manship and history of early
scent bottles, often to Roman an
tiquity. Various auction prices
offer some surprises. Many of the
more recent bottles can be priced
much higher than ancient exam
ples.
Prices depend on many factors
from the name of the maker to
quality of material and artistic
techniques.
Over the centuries the original
purposes of scented oils have var
ied from early use in religious
and funerary ceremonies to aph
rodisiacs. Or, as a coverup for
lack of personal cleanliness.
Their shapes and the materials
used have also changed. From
the 16th century on, when made
by talented artists and craftsmen
they can be classified as minia
ture works of art. The size range
is usually from 2'Ax4 inches.
Over the years, during excava
tions, examples have been found
dating back to ancient Egyptian
bombs and Roman times.
Egyptian bottles imitated the
forms ol Greek ceramic pieces;
tubular and globular. As a status
symbol of the nobility, they were
worn on the wrist from a cord.
These days, many collectors wear
them around their necks as me
dallions.

tant business in Europe. Not only
jewelers, but goldsmiths, glass
makers and ceramic factories cre
ated some of the finest scent bot
tles ever made. France and
Germany made bottles of colored
glass.
In Italy the scent bottles fol
lowed the style of Venetian glass.
However, by the 118th century
glass scent bottles were out of
fashion. The English Bristol fac
tories, with their translucent
blue glass replaced them, as
did English porcelain factor
ies sucn as Bow, Chelsea,
and Worcester. They decor
ated the bottles with Chinoi
serie and often in elaborate
figural forms
At the same time in late
18th century America, small
scent bottles were being
made by the Stiegel Man
heim Glass Works in Penn
sylvania. They were free
blown and pattern-molded
in a wide range of colors.
Some figural forms included
hearts and seahorses.
The Boston and Sandwich
Glass Company made great
quantities of scent bottles
from the mid 19th century,
as did the Pittsburgh Glass
House.
19th century English
scent bottles were made
using the newly popular
cameo glass.
There was a revival of
nailsea (glass with white or
color swirls). Copies of Ger
man enamelware were also
made in England by Bliston
in Staffordshire. In France
and italy millefiori (many
flowers) were created. Popu
lar exports from Bohemia
were ruby and flashed glass,
often combined with floral,
enamel motifs.

Over the years the tops were of
both metal and glass.
By the end of the 19th century
there were new types and styles.
In the early 20th century they
were replaced by perfume bottles.
Gall’e, Lalique and Tiffany scent
bottles can sell in the thousands
of dollars these days.
CLUES: Surprisingly there are
many examples of old Roman
glass scent bottles, often faked.
