Various auction prices offer some surprises. Many of the more recent bottles can be priced much higher than ancient exam ples. Prices depend on many factors from the name of the maker to quality of material and artistic techniques. Over the centuries the original purposes of scented oils have var ied from early use in religious and funerary ceremonies to aph rodisiacs. Or, as a coverup for lack of personal cleanliness. Their shapes and the materials used have also changed. From the 16th century on, when made by talented artists and craftsmen they can be classified as minia ture works of art. The size range is usually from 2'Ax4 inches. Over the years, during excava tions, examples have been found dating back to ancient Egyptian bombs and Roman times. The English Bristol fac tories, with their translucent blue glass replaced them, as did English porcelain factor ies sucn as Bow, Chelsea, and Worcester. They decor ated the bottles with Chinoi serie and often in elaborate figural forms At the same time in late 18th century America, small scent bottles were being made by the Stiegel Man heim Glass Works in Penn sylvania. They were free blown and pattern-molded in a wide range of colors. Some figural forms included hearts and seahorses. The Boston and Sandwich Glass Company made great quantities of scent bottles from the mid 19th century, as did the Pittsburgh Glass House. 19th century English scent bottles were made using the newly popular cameo glass. There was a revival of nailsea (glass with white or color swirls). Copies of Ger man enamelware were also made in England by Bliston in Staffordshire.
