The mid-holiday leftovers
weekend is here.
Shredded bits of torn, colorful
paper turn up in corners of the
house. Errant strands of tree tin
sel cling to sweaters, your snug
gly afghan and the family dog. A
couple of our late mailed holiday
cards are still showing up in post
al deliveries to friends.
Menus feature turkey sand
wiches, turkey and bisquits, tur
key soup, turkey potpie, ham
sandwiches, ham salad, ham cas
seroles. Your favorite cookies,
however, were wiped out days
ago.
In keeping with the mood of
the moment, today we serve up
some leftover tidbits of interest of
the year, lingering on our desk.

We’ll share them to chuckle over
before pitching them for good.
Just in case you had not had
your bellyful of turkey about
now, ponder the turkey and
gravy-flavored soda that a Seattle
company released in a limited
amount, just prior to Thanksgiv
ing. The Jones Soda Company is
reportedly known for devising
quirky-flavored soft drinks. Soon
after the drink’s release, the
novel flavored soda was selling
on e-Bay.com for more than $6O
for a two-pack bottle.
Let’s just be thankful they only
made a limited amount.
Also from the West Coast
comes the tale of a chicken that
became famous sometime ago

The time-tested method of draw

In more news of the bird
world, hawks trained to control
the pidgeon overpopulation in a
New York City park were
grounded following a slight alter
cation in the park involving one
of the aerial patrols. The hawks
were being utilized to limit pi
geon numbers, aimed at im
proved sanitation lor park user.
The successful-to-that-point
park cleanup effort came to a
screeching halt when one of the
flying patrols sailed down and
sank its talons into the back of a
chihuahua, out for a walk with
its owner. The tiny pooch was
promptly shipped off to a veteri
narian via one of the city’s taxis
and the hawks retired from duty.
Can’t you just visualize the pi
geons celebrating that move as
they partied on the park’s statu

Timely for this Flu Season
comes research findings that sug
gest your mood has a lot to do
with “catching a cold.” People
who are nervous, depressed or
angry were found to be more
likely to come down with colds
than folks who are happy, opti
mistic, and upbeat.
We’ve always suspected that,
having observed over the years
that those in our extended family
tended to catch colds when they
were stressed out by life’s de
mands.
So, chill out.
Now, as we head toward the
sometimes noisy and raucus cele
brations that go with the arrival
of a new year, please take to
heart a mid-summer news tidbit
from our own local state police
headquarters. After being hauled
in to the barracks for drunken
driving, an individual phoned an
acquaintance to come pick him
up at headquarters and take him
home. The friend showed up at

Farm Net, the day-long ses
sion, is scheduled for Feb.l.
The program will focus on is
sues faced by women who are
owners and managers of an
agricultural business as well as
women who are working on
their family farms.
Betty Nichols, of Rushford,
N.Y. said, ‘Sometimes we
(farm women) are put on the
back burner. We need to know
what’s going on just as much
as our husbands do. It needs
to be a partnership. Frequent

with the nutritionist, veteri

and I need to know how to
work with them.”

Special Session For Women
In Agriculture At New York
Fruit And Vegetable Expo
CORNELL, N. Y. A spe
cial session geared toward
women involved in the busi
ness of agriculture is planned
at the 2004 Empire State Fruit
and Vegetable Expo, Feb
10-12 at the Rochester Clarion
Hotel and the Riverside Con
vention Center in Rochester.
the barracks, where officers
promptly noted that the second
individual appeared to be having
similarly over-imbibed. After in
vestigation, they filed DUI
charges against the friend.
We are still wondering who fi
nally hauled this pair to their
homes.
Which behooves us to share
the thought that, if one wishes to
celebrate the incoming year with
something fermented, consider
sauerkraut. Sauerkraut is tasty,
(especially when paired with
some pork roast or chops) very
inexpensive and, according to
local tradition, assures good luck
through the ensuing year if eaten
on New Year’s Day.
So, if you want to have a good
new year, resolve to eat your
sauerkraut for good luck. Resolve
to be upbeat and happy.
And please resolve to never
send a chicken skyward attached
to a pack of balloons.
Happy New Year!
A highlight of the women's
session will be a female farmer
panel discussion tegarding the
role of women in agriculture
The panelists will share expe
riences concerning marketing,
management and business
changes that are being faced
and their roles throughout the
process ol decision-making.
In addition, speakers from
Cornell and the industry will
discuss information on mar
keting, communication, regu
lations for farm labor record
keeping and health care plan
ning for farm families.
