“I hate the thought of living on
crop insurance, but with the
weather the last few years, we
don't have any choice. After last
year’s drought, 2002 was abso
lutely terrible for us, and if it
were not for crop insurance, we
wouldn’t be here today.”
In addition to crop insurance,
the Ballets installed water pivots
that can irrigate 70 acres.
When asked on what advice he
would give to young people look
ing into farming. Matt noted it
was important not to lose heart.
“There are a lot of discourag
ing people out there,” said Matt.
“We’ve had some people around

you can’t go halfway. Whether
it’s borrowing the money to
get started, you might as well
do it and do it right off the
bat. It’s not easy, but it is not

for the Farm Bureau’s young
farmer and rancher program. It
provides them with the oppertu
nities to see other young farmers.
“In an area here where ag is
pretty much on a downhill slide
because of development pressure,
it lets us go places and see there
is somebody else our age farm
ing,” said Matt.
The Balliets believe that meet
ing people at state and national
Farm Bureau events is a great ex-
perience.
