Sheep and Lambs Compared to last Monday,
slaughter lambs sold firm to sharply higher,
with the bulk of the supply 10 00 to 12 00 high
er 1 ight weight lambs sold with a firmer under
tone on a very light supply, however several
packages of 40-50 lbs lambs sold as much as
20 00-40 00 higher than this time last week The
bulk of the run consisted of middle weight
lambs between 70-100 lbs, with several larger,
higher quality packages to choose from Heavy
weight lambs were in short supply Slaughter
sheep sold mostlv to steady on an average run.

Compared to Thursday, slaughter steers sold
mostly 2 00-3 00 lower on Mondav, with the
very light Tuesday run trending mostly steady
with Monday Receipts were traditionally light
on both days as Christmas is on Thursday
Packers will be dark for at least one day this
week, which was evident in the light early week
demand The current finished market is still
pretty good if it stays in the high 80 l s and low
90‘s, however if it gets below those levels the
producers who were paying 116 00-118 00 for
heavy 7 weight feeder cattle a few months ago
may have a hard time breaking even The
Board is still supportive in the nearby months,
with the spot January live cattle contract clos
ing at 92 35 on Thursday However, futures are
in the 70‘s when you get as far out as this sum
mer There were not enough slaughter Holstein
steers or slaughter heifers for a market test
Lean slaughter cows sold mostly 25 to 100
lower, while fleshier cows sold between
2 00-4 00 lower The combined two-day run in
cluded 152 head of slaughter steers, 31 head of
slaughter heifers, 409 head of slaughter cows, 17
head of slaughter bulls and 22 head of feeder

Calves Compared to last Tuesday, slaughter
calves sold sharply lower as one buyer was able
to set the market Holstein bull calves going into
special- fed veal bams sold steady to 10 00
lower on heavy weight calves over 100 lbs How
ever, the bulk of the Graded run sold sharply
lower, m-part due to the size of the pre-holiday
run, buyers had over 1100 to choose from Hol
stein heifers sold mostly steady to weak the ma
jority of the supply, however, light weight Num
ber One's and Two's sold sharply lower The PA
Department of Agriculture graded 947 head of
bulls for the graded sale, with an estimated 80
percent of the graded run going into veal barns
