Compared to Thursday, slaughter steers sold
fully steady on Tuesday after prices were as
much as 1 00 lower on Monday The quality of
the run was below average on Monday How
ever, the Tuesday supply included a couple
groups of hard-fed steers which continue to
bring over 100 00 Holstein slaughter steers sold
mostly steady on a very light run Slaughter
heifers sold steady to weak The western direct
feedyards have started to move steers on Tues
day morning this week with live sales in the
Southern Plains mostly 200 lower at 98 00
Dressed sales in Nebraska are from 3 00-5 00
lower at 157.00 It has been a while since this
very good market has seen much weakness, and
it‘s hard to remember the last time the western
yards were reporting the bulk of their sales
below 100.00 Nevertheless, prices are still good
for the time being, and still much better than
they were a year ago at this time Boxed beef
cutout values were not affected to heavily by the
lower cash trade, with the Choice cutout still
from around 155.00-156 00 The Merc, however,
took notice The spot December live cattle con
tract closed down-the-limit (1 50) on Tuesday at
95 52, with spot January also 150 points lower
at 92 72 Slaughter cows sold weak to 200
lower, with not enough slaughter bulls on offer
to test the market The combined two-day run
included 232 head of slaughter steers, 13 head
of slaughter heifers, 340 head of slaughter cows,
8 head of slaughter bulls, and 8 head of feeder
cattle
Note. A special feeder sale in scheduled for
December 15th at the Vintage Sales Stables set
to begin right after the fat cattle sale

THURSDAY
LAST WEEK
LAST YEAR
Compared to last Thursday, slaughter steers
sold mostly 2 00-3 50 lower throughout all of
the quality grades It did not come as much of a
surprise though, as the western trade set the
tone mid-week when their live cattle were
3 00-5 00 lower from 96 00-98 00 Dressed sales
in Nebraska were from 5 00-7 00 lower at
155 00 The Board has not been farmer-fnendlv
as of late either, as the current spot December
live cattle contract closed at 93 57 on Thursday
(holding a 2 00-4 00 discount to the cash trade)
Most local producers have become accustomed
to receiving 100 00 or more for their fats, and
even though sales have begun to move below
that magic number both local and national fin
ished prices are still very good at these levels A
lot of the cattle at the Thursday New Holland
run are still carrying some fill, with buyers pur
chasing the belhed-up steers around 3 00-5.00
lower than the bulk However, full weigh-ups
can be expected now as temperatures are drop
ping, and snow and rain will become a perma
nent fixture in our forecasts as we move
through the winter months Prices were not the
only thing that were lower late in the week, re
ceipts were nearly 100 head lighter than last
Thursday's, and the overall quality of the run
was lower as well. Slaughter Holstein steers sold
mostly 1 00-2 50 lower on an uneven test as
there were not very many higher quality Hol
stems available Slaughter heifers sold 2 00-2 50
lower, although there was a fairly nice selection
on offer Lean slaughter cows sold 2 00-3 00
lower, with fleshier cows trading steady to 1 00
lower Cow receipts high for the second week in
a row, with over 675 head on offer at this
Thursday's run Slaughter bulls sold mostly
steady The Thursday supply included 353 head
of slaughter steers, 68 head of slaughter heifers,
678 head of slaughter cows, 152 head of slaugh
ter bulls, with 259 head of feeder cattle
