Compared to Friday, the bulk of the slaugh
ter steers sold steady to firm, with high Choice
and Pnme steers 1 SO higher Bidding was mod
erately active with light to moderate buyer at
tendance on Monday, in part due to opening
day m many local areas drawing crowds out of
the barns and into the woods The supply in
cluded a few high quality runs of Holstein steers
on Monday, along with several nice packages of
black and Charolais influenced cattle both days
Weigh-up conditions were average with very
few full offerings Slaughter cows sold mostly
I 00-2 00, the bulk of the supply consisted of
80-90 percent lean cows Cherall quality was a\-
erage with below average weigh-up conditions
Slaughter bulls sold mostly steady on a light
test The slaughter supply included 304 steers,
43 heifers, 443 cows, and 16 bulls There were
21 head of feeder cattle

Compared to last Friday, slaughter steers
sold I 00-2 00 lower, with the bulk of the salts a
full 200 lower However, last Friday's receipts
were only half of this weeks as nearly 420 head
made their way through the ring this Thursday
The first snow storm this winter is expected to
hit eastern Pennsylvania late Thursday night
with some of the tattle tarrying some fill due to
the weather The quality of the run was mainly
Choice, with the few high Choice or Prime cat
tle that are available still bringing as much as
112 50 You won't hear any complaints from
the local producers though, as the majority of
the cattle are still selling for over 100 00 Tht
red meat trade has resumed to normal after mil
lions of pounds of turkey were consumed last
week, that is normal, if you consider volatile
normal as boxed beef cutout values have been
lower the past couple of days Choice cuts were
from 156 03-159 72 on Thursday, down from
I 11-1 80 when compared to the prior day The
Mercantile Exchange has not been farmer
friendly either, with the December live cattle
contract down 110 at 97 05 on Thursday, and
January down 1 22 at 93 75 The slaughter Hol
stein steer and slaughter heifer markets were
not well tested Lean slaughter cows sold
75-1 25 lower, with fleshier cows trending
1 50-3 50 lower There was an outstanding run
of cows as 760 head were made available as
supplies were very light last Friday and on
Monday, leading to the major increase late this
week Slaughter bulls sold mostly 200 lower
with several full bulls on offer The Thursday
supply included 416 head of slaughter steers, 78
head of slaughter heifers, 758 head of slaughter
cows, 88 head of slaughter bulls, with 202 head
of feeder cattle
