Myers, agricultural marketing
specialist with the Howard
County Economic Development
Authority (EDA), is participat
ing in a three-week-long mission
to Moldova as part of Citizens
Network for Foreign Affairs
(CNFA) Agribusiness Volunteer
Program.
Funded by the Office of Pri
vate and Voluntary Cooperation
of the U.S. Agency for the Inter
national Development, CNFA is
a nonprofit, nonpartisan organi
zation dedicated to stimulating
international economic growth
in developing and emerging
world markets.
Through partnerships be
tween the public and private
sector, CNFA works to foster
sustainable development and
create market-oriented, eco
nomically viable enterprises
where none or few existed
before. The long-term goal of its
Agribusiness Volunteer Pro
gram is to develop private
farmer associations, coopera
tives, private agribusinesses,
women and young farmer
groups, and other organizations
that can help people increase
their incomes and well-being.
The program also provides U.S.
clubs with fundraising through
its Equine Rewards program.
The clubs earn money for every
proof-of-purchase redeemed
from Agway and Triple Crown
equine bagged feeds.
More than 80 horse clubs in
the Northeast are participating
in Equine Rewards. They enlist
the help ol club and family
members, the community, and
their local Agway dealers in col
lecting proofs-of-purchase from
the Agway and ! riple Crown
bags.
Here’s how the piogram

Feeds and sets up an Equine Re
wards account. The club then
sends in its proofs-of-purchase
to Agway Bagged Feeds, which
are recorded in its Equine Re

ment with CNFA because it
deals with helping a newly
formed vegetable growers coop
erative develop a marketing
plan,” said Myers. “The plan
will serve as a road map for busi
ness development.”

their terms, not mine,” Myers
said.
With a population of about
4.4 million, Moldova’s main in
dustrial activity is agricultural
processing, which is comprised
of wine production and the pro
cessing of fruits and vegetables.
Chimsem, which is a coopera
tive established in Moldova in
2001, began active operations in
January of this year. Because
the cooperative did not have
enough working capital, its ac
tiv ,ty is based on orders ot vari
ous vegetables, sunflower, and
cereal seeds collected from the
individual farmers, most of
which prepay in advance
Today, Chimsem has orders for
vegetables and cereal seeds from
more than 150 clients. Chimsem
spreads the word about its ser
vices by posting advertisements
around the village, which had
resulted in 30 new customers
during the month of March.

million Moldovan peasants have
become landowners. The eupho
