TRACT II (PHASE 2) TRACT 111 (PHASES 3 & 4) Lancaster County Weekly Cattle New Holland, Pa. Report Supplied By USDA Friday, Nov. 21,2003 CATTLE CALVES 2772 2019 THIS WEEK 2717 LAST WEEK 2795 LAST YEAR This week in Lancaster County, slaughter steers sold 1 00-3.00 lower, with sales as much as 5 00 lower in Vintage, with the bulk of the Tuesday supply weighing up full lt‘s beginning to sound like a broken record as one describes the market filcture in Lancaster County You would have to be ivins under a rock right now to not know that fin ished prices are outstanding (over 100 00 for high Select grades and better), the quality of the cattle is lower than it usually is (due to most producers cleaning their supplies out as the market got high er), and that demand doesn't seem to be wavenng too much as receipts are light. Kosher buyers are still on the hunt for the long-feds, and most North east packers would rather pay m the upper-60‘s for Premium White cows than continue to pay the big money for slaughter steers. With that said. Thanksgiving is only a week away, and grocers have been in full turkey promotion mode for the past month Usually, there will be a slight dip in the market as we gather around the butterballs, but this year consumer demand for red meat has been excellent Also, Christmas is right around the comer, when most families prefer a prime rib. There were a few direct cattle traded in Nebraska on Thursday, from mostly 98.00-99.00, which is 1.00-2 00 lower However, marketing in the mid western states does remain light, as the amount of true finished cattle is low. Slaughter Holstein steers and slaughter heifer receipts were light this week in the County. Not only were they light, but the few that were available were lower Quality. Slaughter cows sold steady to 2 00 lower through mid-week, although all losses were recouped by weeks end as prices were 1.00- 3.00 higher There has been an outstanding supply of Breaking and Premium White cows over the past few months in New Holland on Thursday, with packers con suming them without hesitation. Slaughter bulls sold steady early in the week, and trended higher late in the week as cow prices were higher. The cattle supply this week in Lancaster County in cluded 6/5 slaughter steers, 134 slaughter heifers, 1156 slaughter cows, 124 slaughter bulls, and 683 head of feeder cattle. Note; The New Holland Sales Stables will be closed on Thursday November the 27th in observ ance of the Thanksgiving holiday. A regular sale will be held on Friday the 28th at the regular time. This report will not be released until Friday No vember the 28th.
