Dry each straw of semen thoroughly. Use sanitary procedures when preparing to insert the insemination device. • Consider using protective rods or sheaths in herds where vulvovaginal infection is a chronic problem. • Other than breeding cows in “true” heat, accu rate rod tip placement is probably the most import ant skill involved in the artificial insemination process. The target for insemination, the uterine body, is small. Twenty years ago, researchers at Penn State used radiography to evaluate accuracy of A.I. technique and determine the dimensions of the uterine body. This method permits the interior of the tract to be viewed without dissection.
