Hayes

During his tenure as agricul
ture secretary, Hayes secured
funding for the expansion and
renovation of the Farm Show
Complex, construction of a new
Meat Evaluation Center, and a
new greenhouse at the agricul
ture department. The Depart
ment of Agriculture under Hayes’
direction developed new pro
grams for agriculture, such as the
Pennsylvania Produce ... Simply
Delicious produce marketing
program, development of the
state’s crop insurance program,
the Export for Scholars program,
and Next Generation Farmer
Loan Program. Hayes was also
one of the original six conferees
in the legislature when the Penn
sylvania’s farmland preservation
law was passed and, as agricul
ture secretary, moved the state’s
farmland preservation program
to lead the nation.
Donaldson also noted that 11
years ago Hayes was honored by
PFB. “Sam was presented 11
years ago at Pennsylvania Farm
Bureau’s annual meeting with
the Bam Raiser Award, which
recognizes continued leadership
to the agriculture community.
And tonight we take the opportu
nity to commend him again for
his tireless devotion to Pennsyl
vania Agriculture.”
Hayes, from Warriors Mark,
expressed his thanks for receiving
the 2003 recognition.
“It is an honor to stand here
once again in Hershey,” he said.
In recognition of his accomplish
ments in agriculture, he noted it
was not done by him alone.

million Pennsylvanians and mil
lions beyond our common
wealth’s boarders.”
Hayes concluded his remarks
saying, he had “the greatest ap
preciation any one person can
have for those who are farmers.”
Lebanon, Lehigh County Young Farmers Win PFB Awards

this contest and making it possi
ble for us to participate in it.”
Heagy also thanked his par

Semmel was one of three final

tition during the PFB Annual
Meeting.
Semmel is employed full time
at the family’s registered Holstein
and Brown Swiss dairy farm in
Schnecksville. She is past chair of
Young Farmer and Rancher Pro
gram, and I owe a lot to that,”
said Semmel.
Semmel also thanked her fami
ly for the guidance and support.
“Without them, many of the
things I have been able to accom
plish, I would not have been able
to accomplish without their sup
port.”
