The Mercantile Exchange posted limit-up gams on Tuesday in the live cattle pits, although it wasn't able to spark any sort of western trade. Boxed beef cutout values were reported higher Tuesday morning, with Choice carcasses from 167 00-169.00. It's the time of year when Tur key specials takes up a good portion of your grocers meat counter, and it would be safe to say that most stores are having a hard time con vincing shoppers to pick a high priced red meat item in place of the traditional turkey. The slaughter heifer and Holstein markets were not tested. Slaughter cows sold weak to 2.00 lower, although demand remains good es pecially for Premium White cows, as many packers are shying away from the continued high price of slaughter steers. The combined two-day run included 312 head of slaughter steers, 87 head of slaughter heifers, 422 head of slaughter cows, 17 head of slaughter bulls, and 289 head of feeder cattle. LAST WEEK LAST YEAR Compared to last Thursday, slaughter steers sold 1.50-2.50 lower, with heavy Choice steers as much as 3.00 lower at times The quality of the run was average, and included primarily Choice cattle that continue to bring from mostly 103 00-105.00 The high Choice and Prime cat tle are still heavily sought after by kosher buy ers, with prices from mostly 110.00-112.00, the only problem is there is currently not near the supply of high quality cattle that the area is known for Prices remain outstanding for fin ished steers, especially considering what levels producers were selling cattle for this time last year. Receipts remain light as well, as around 300 head of steers were checked in on Thurs day. That 300 head includes Holstems, black and mixed pen cattle. So in reality, there were around 175 head that would grade Select or bet ter. It came as somewhat of a surprise that bids were not lower than they were at the Thursday sale, after most major mid-western markets moved steers lower mid-week. The direct feed yards in Nebraska sold show lists from 98.00-99.00 live on Thursday, which is 1.00-2.00 lower. The CME has not been overly bullish or bearish, with the current spot November live cattle contract closing at 99.42 on Thursday (which is perfectly aligned with the cash trade), and December closing at 94.50. In fact, live fu tures prices taper off slowly clear to August of 2004, which closed at 73.57. Take that for what it‘s worth. Slaughter Holstein and heifer num bers remain light and a trend was not estab lished. Slaughter cows sold 1.00-2 00 higher, with Boning cows as much as 3.00 higher. De mand continues to be high for Premium White cows as packers are willing to pay up to 65.00 for them to keep their chains hill, as most are still shying away from procuring too many of these high prices steers. Slaughter bulls sold with a higher undertone, although the run was lighter than last weeks; and higher cow prices, as can be expected, have added some fire onto the bull market. The supply included 316 head of slaughter steers, 47 head of slaughter heifers, 550 head of slaughter cows, 69 head of slaugh ter bulls, with 269 head of feeder cattle.
