November 14,2003 Report Supplied By USDA NATIONAL FEEDER & STOCKER CAT TLE SUMMARY for week ending Nov. 14 Total Receipts; 534,400; last week 414,800; last year 493,200. Direct: 49,500; last week 43,100; last year 76,600. Video/Intemet; 34,100; last week 1,700; last year 26,600. Auctions: 450,800; last week 370,000; last year 390,000. This week’s reported auction volume included 24 percent over 600 lbs and 42 percent heifers. Compared to last week, steer and heifer calves sold steady to 4.00 higher with fancy strings of ranch calves m the mountain slates trading as much as 6.00 higher. Calf demand was report edly good in all areas, even though recent frosts and dry conditions in the winter wheat regions have curtailed much of the fall grazing opportu nities. If you wanted to be a cattle buyer this week, you needed an outlet for calves as year lings were scarce and Gat cattle trading never fully developed. The few yearlings for sale this week sold near steady but feeder buyers found it hard to pay current levels for a handful of year lings to put on their calf loads. Sizeable premi ums were paid for weaned calves with condition and the ability to go straight to the feedlot and perform The calf market shrugged off sharp fu tures market losses as volatility continued this week. December CME Live Cattle contracts made limit moves three out of the five set tlement days and ended 2.72 lower at 94.10. Packers and cattle feeders couldn’t agree on a fair price for this week’s showlists. Feedlots cited the exhausted supply of market-ready cat tle while packers reasoned lower bids from the slight losses in boxed beef cut- out values. Heavy Choice cut-outs lost 7.36 this week de spite lower chain speeds. However, retailers are gearing up for Thanksgiving and have their minds and features made up for turkeys and hams. Consumer beef demand is much less sea sonal and so far has remained strong through higher prices. Much of this can be attributed to the late, great Dr. Robert C. Atkins whose high protein low carbohydrate weight loss phn has swept the nation. Many Americans who struggle with a weight problem find it easier to follow the At kins diet than other weight loss plans. The suc cess and popularity of this diet has almost sin gle-handedly changed the urban reputation of red meat and spawned countless products, from beer to bread, to help people make the Atkins diet a way of life. Many cattlemen can’t believe they are losing weight on steak and eggs, allow ing them to enjoy this cattle market and see their bell buckle - once again.
