and early 20th century. The Italian comedy fig
ures series are relatively rare. Many are un
marked. The dwarf figures, after the engravings
of Callot, were made in the Cozzi factory in Ven
ice, and are also unmarked. The popular Napo
leon figures that often have a Capodimonte mark
were heavily faked and reproduced in the 20th
century.
In the late 18th century the Derby factory in
England made a series of Italian comedy figures,
based on the original Meissen pieces. They are
unmarked. Unlike the original Meissen figures
the colors were less vivid. Clues to their origin
may be found in three or four patch marks on
the bottom. These were caused by the clay props
that held them in place in the kiln. They may or
may not be marked with a capital D.
Various design influences of the time usually
dictated the subjects of the figures. The interest
in the Orient resulted in English, French and
German figures with Oriental features and dress.
Among them the nodding figures. When un
marked they can confuse novice collectors. Peri
odically individual figures of the monkey band
turn up, usually from the late 19th to early 20th
century. Many collectors have collected the band
pieces over the years and one at a time from
many makers.
