ings that later became engravings, pub
lished in folios in the 19th century.
The first hand-colored, copper engraved
bird paintings appeared in books about
1730. By 1830 hand-colored lithographs
were made.
Chromolithographs, were printed in
color after 1850. Almost all bird prints
were made in Germany, France or Eng
land. A few were made in Italy, Holland
and Scandinavia.
CLUES: When an auction catalog de
scribes an early print as “trimmed” and
“laid down” it means it isn’t the original
size and possibly the folio page number
has been cut off.
“Laid down” means the print has been
glued to a backing, as was common in the
early 20th century. Both methods lower
values. A “restrike” is a later printing
using the original
plate.
That is the case with
many audubons. If not
so labeled it is all but
impossible to tell.
Since the prints are
very expensive, the
problem surfaces later
on when you want to
sell them.
Authentic prints
should have been
made in the artists’
lifetime.
For instance, only a
Rembrandt print made
in his lifetime can be
considered authentic;
not those made in the
18th century by an

A “facsimile” is a photochemical repro
duction of a print.
Examining it with a strong magnifying
glass should show the pattern of tell-tale
small dots.
A “reproductive print” is an original
print that is a copy of a painting or draw
ing.
You’re on your own when an auction
description says “not examined out of
frame.”
The watermakers, platemarks or collec
tor’s mark would authenticate or disqual
ify a print.
Many late impressions of Old Master
prints may have been touched up with
India ink or watercolors to simulate the
burr or rich inking of early impressions.
Think twice before buying a print with
‘foxing” (brown spotting) or tears. Resto
ration is costly and must be done by an ex
pert.
