THE ANTIQUE
DETECTIVE
What You Should Know
Before Buying Prints
Is that attractive bird or ship
print as old as it looks?
These days when supposedly
antique prints show up in shops
and at auctions for top dollar,
you’d best understand the des
criptive terms that describe
them, and if they are indeed as
old as represented.
For a a beginner, print collect
ing can be a risky business. Rule
number one is that when an a
specific artist and his works be
come popular, faking is a fore
gone conclusion. Even artist Al
bert Durer had problems with
the faking and copying of his
prints back in 1512. Copies of his
works had become so wide
spread that the Nuremberg town
council wrote a decree making
this a crime. Woodblocks and
copperplates made reprints easy
even in those days.
Back in the 19705, the growth
of the limited editions market
created hundreds of Salvador
Dali and Pablo Picasso “unlimit
ed editions;” many with faked
signatures. They still make the
rounds in shops and small auc
tions as genuine.
Since they were first printed,
Audobon birds, sporting prints,
and Currier and Ives subjects
have been the most reprinted.
When Audobon prints come to
auction, prices can vary depend
ing on condition, who the printer
was and its rarity. Birds and bo
tanicals can still be discovered,
but unfortunately they have
often been trimmed to fit a pic
ture frame. They aren’t the bar-

gain they seem.
Bird and botanicals usually
had their beginnings as part of a
book (folio). Like many book il

moved from the books and sold
separately over the years. While
just about everybody has heard
of Audubon, less familiar artists
such as John Gould, Francois
Levaillant, and Edward Lear can
still be found at estate and ga

Like Audubon, these artists
