    Grumbine Judges Blue Valley Swine Show

BANGOR (Northampton Co.)
The 4-H market swine compe
tition was recently conducted
during the Blue Valley Farm
Show.
Judge for the event was Dennis
Grumbine, former Farm show di
rector and past president of the
Pennsylvania Livestock Associa
tion (PLA). A lifelong farmer and
livestock producer, die Lebanon
County resident has been involv
ed in county fairs and the 4-H
program all his life.
For his champion fitter Grum
bine selected Nicole Kondziela,
19, from the senior division.
Kondziela, daughter of Tim and
Terry Kondziela completed her
last year of 4-H eligibility and
will be starting her second year at
Green Mountain College, Ver
mont, majoring in secondary ed
ucation with a concentration in
history.
For his reserve fitter, Grum
bine went with the winner of the
junior competition first-year
member Hanna Bauman, 8,
daughter of Mel and Anita Bau
man, Bangor. Bauman is in the
fourth grade at DeFranco Ele
mentary School and completed
the sheep, dairy goat and market
swine projects this year as well as
belonging to the Backtrackers
Horse 4-H Club.
Champion showman honors
went to Jennifer Hower, 18,
daughter of Ned and Linda
Hower, Bethlehem. In her first
year of the market swine project,
Hower is a recent graduate of
Nazareth High School and is at
tending Northampton County
Community College working to
wards a major in elementary and
special education. Hower also
completed the beef breeding,
market steer, and horse produc
tion projects and is a member of
the Northampton County 4-H
teen council.
The reserve showman title
went to Joel Geiger, 18-year-old
son of Sherwood and Kathy Gei
ger, Danielsville. Geiger will be
continuing his education at Penn
State-Lehigh Campus majoring
in Ag Business. Geiger, a member
of the livestock and Clever Clo
ver Community 4-H clubs, and
Northampton County 4-H teen
council and has served as a 4-H
ambassador and attended the
4-H National Congress. Geiger
also received the champion bred
and owned market swine banner.
In reviewing the entries,
Grumbine selected the
257-pound Duroc/Hampshire
cross gilt from the heavy weight
class of first year member Hanna
Bauman as his grand champion
market hog.
The reserve champion market
hog rosette went to the 219
pound winner of the medium
weight class exhibited by Andrew
Hower, 12. In his third year of
the 4-H swine project and fourth
year of 4-H, Hower will be in the
seventh grade at Northampton
Middle School. Hower, son of
Blair and Amy Hower, is also a
member of the Clever Clovers
Community 4-H club and com
pleted the potato judging project
this year.
Geiger and Kondziela, respect
hilly, then captured the champi
on and reserve champion pair of
market hog titles.
