A3B-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, November 1,2003 Unusual Cattle Breeds Gain Attention During KILE HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) Two cattle breeds, uncom mon in Pennsylvania, entered the Large Arena of the Farm Show Complex on Saturday during the Keystone International Livestock Exposition. The crowd watched in awe as the Texas Longhorn and Highland Cattle entered the ring. Neither are your typical beef breed; varying in both ap pearance and preparation tech nique. Showing cattle naturally is standard for each breed. Texas Longhorns are known for their distinctive horns and rugged ap pearance; while Highland cattle are covered in a thick, long coat of hair and are shorter in stature. In both the Junior and Open Breeding Competitions, exhibi tors were recognized for their ex cellent showmanship and high quality animals. The Texas Longhorn Competi tion occured Saturday morning, during the All Eastern Junior Beef Breeding Show. Mary Cline of Aspers, won Grand Champion Female with her Longhorn heifer who was shown by Shane McCleaf of Biglerville. Cline, President of the International Texas Longhorn Association, is also an accredited Longhorn judge. During the Junior show, Blue Ridge Slick Rusty walked away with the Grand Champion Steer award. Randy Sutton’s steer was shown by 18 year-old, Brandon Hawks, of Wyoming, NY. This was Brandon’s first win at KILE. Pleasant Valley Cattle Compa ny of Smithsburg, Md. won the All-Age Grand Champion Fe male award for the second year in a row with their heifer, Tiptoes Oklahoma Cowgirl. Although this is the family’s second year at KILE, they have been showing Longhorns since 1995. Both the All-Age Grand Champion and All-Age Reserve Grand Champion Bull’s were ex hibited by Misty Hollow Farm of Wolfsville, Md. The All-Age Grand Champion, Ain’t Impres sive, was shown by Debbie McCLain. The heifer has previ ously won Grand Champion In termediate Bull and Reserve Grand Champion Intermediate Bull at the Great Frederick Fair in Maryland. Debbie’s husband Eddie McCLain exhibited Diago, who was chosen as the All-Age Reserve Grand Champion. Misty Hollow Farm has been showing fine Texas Longhorns for five years. Pee Wee through senior show men participated in the All-East ern Junior Highland Cattle Show on Saturday afternoon. The show kicked off as a single bagpipe player led the first class around the arena. Vicky Ross, a 16 year old from Waterford, exhibited Literra Praise, who is owned by Judith Ligo of Literra Farm. Lit erra Praise was named grand champion female. During the Open Breeding Highland Show, Black Watch Kalen took home the grand champion female award. Black Watch Kalen is owned by Frank and Liz Manafort of Black Watch Farm, Springfield, Vt. Chris Markwell, the Black Watch Farm Herd Manager, exhibited the heifer. Kalen has also placed at the Denver National Highland Stock Show and at the NEHCA in Springfield, Mass. Closing out the Open Breeding Highland Show, Trafalgar Luther owned by Theodore Robbins took home the Grand Champion Bull award. Greg Markwell of North Pomfret, Vt., a 17 year veteran of KILE, exhibited Luther. The win ning bull has received Grand Champion at the N.Y. State Fair, along with Reserve Grand Champion awards at several other competitions. Class placings are as follows: KILE BEEF CATTLE SHOW RESULTS JUNIOR BREEDING CATTLE Height I. 1. Heather M.
