Compared to Thursday, the bulk of the run
was a full 1.00-2.00 lower on Monday. However,
buyers were somewhat active on Tuesday as
bids were a full 1.00-1.50 higher than the Mon
day sales, with the bulk of the increase on the
average Choice and Select cattle. The quality of
the two-day run was below average for the most
part, with the exception of a few reputation fed
lots. The cattle complex remains volatile early
in the week. The spot October live cattle con
tract closed 1 50 lower on Tuesday at 100.20,
with limit-down losses across the entire live cat-

tie board. The western direct fecdlots are keep
ing a tight grip on cattle so far this week, a few
live sales have trickled in at 101.00, but move
ment is extremely light so far. The wind has
definitely been let out of the boxed beef mar
ket's sale as Choice cuts were another 2.80-3.50
lower on Tuesday from around 170.00-173.00;
Select cuts from 4.30-5.22 lower, or around
147.00-148.00. It would be a safe guess that
steady would be a huge victory for cattle feeders
this week with so much bearishness in the air
Slaughter Holstein steers and slaughter heifers
were in very light supply and a trend was not
established. Lean slaughter cows sold 2.00;
while fleshier cows sold 1.00 to mostly 2.00
lower, with the majority of the run between
80-90 percent lean with poorer weigh up condi
tions. A good run of Holstein slaughter bulls
sold steady to 1.00 lower. The combined two
day run included 295 head of slaughter steers,
48 head of slaughter heifers, 471 head of
slaughter cows, 26 head of slaughter bulls, and
27 head of feeder cattle.

MONDAY
LAST WEEK
LAST YEAR
Compared to last Thursday, slaughter steers
sold mostly steady. However, when compared to
the Tuesday run Choice steers were 1.00 to
nearly 2.00 higher. The run included a lot of av
erage Choice and high Select steers on Thurs
day, as high Choice and Prime cattle remain
hard to come by. However, the market is still
very good as the bulk of the supply continues to
bring over 100.00. A set of 108 S lb black steers
brought 92.00 on Thursday to go back on feed,
the same kind of cattle last week sold for 89.00,
which goes to show there is still a few people
out there that have a lot of faith in this finished
market. Boxed beef cutout values were down
.79-1.48 on Thursday, with Choice cuts from
165.51- 167.72. Although, the lower meat mar
ket may be justified with Thanksgiving only
about 4 weeks away, when traditionally con
sumers lean much heavier to the turkey and
ham side of the meat cases; especially with the
high price of red meat. There were not enough
Holstein steers or slaughter heifers for a market
test.
Lean slaughter cows sold mostly 1.00 to 2.00
lower; while fleshier offerings traded mostly
steady to 1.50 lower than last week. The supply
included 430 head of slaughter steers, 87 head
of slaughter heifers, 542 head of slaughter cows,
66 head of slaughter bulls, with 277 head of
feeder cattle.
Note; The New Holland Sales Stables will be
holding a special feeder cattle sale on Friday
October the 31st, to begin at 6 pm.
