619. Compared to last Thursday, slaughter
calves sold mostly steady. Number 1 Holstein
bull calves going into special-fed veal barns sold
steady to lower, with the Number 2 and 3 sup
plies trending with a firmer undertone. Holstein
heifer calves sold sharply lower, as heifers were
as high as 620.00 last week at this time. The PA
Department of Agriculture graded 619 head of
bulls for the graded sale, with an estimated 83
percent of the graded run going into veal barns.

SHEEP AND LAMBS: Compared to Mon
day, demand was light for heavier weight
slaughter lambs as they sold S.OO to 7.00 lower.
Middle weight lambs sold mostly steady with
good demand remaining for the lighter weight
lambs. Slaughter sheep sold steady to weak,
with demand lighter toward the end of the sale.
Buyer attendance was light with very light bid
ding activity.

head, although by week's end decreasing prices kept
nervous producers at home as New Holland only re
corded around 290 head It’s no doubt supplies are
tight throughout the County, with extremely high
prices over the last month bringing a lot of steers to
town that could have easily been left on feed National
ly, the western direct feed yards in Nebraska moved
black-hided steers at mostly 10000, a full IS 00 lower
However, by Thursday afternoon packers went back in
and paid from 102 00-103 00 to fill their slaughter
needs The Merc has been very volatile as of late, with
limit-up gains across much of the live cattle board on
Thursday The spot October live cattle contract is at
9765, November at 94 72, and January sits at 88 12
Boxed beef cutout values have been sharply lower
throughout the week As of Thursday night, the Choice
cutout was from 184 71-186 66, with packers holding
onto a 20 00-2200 discount on the Select carcasses
Back in the County, Lean slaughter cows sold steady to
3 00 lower for the week, with the fleshier supply trad
ing steady to as much as 500 lower Slaughter bulls
