SUMMARY - Week Ending Oct. 17: Slaugh
ter cattle trade 12.00-14.00 higher live basis.
Market lines were vague at midweek as pack
ers needing numbers at any cost to fulfdl out
front contracts that became due. Boxed beef
values Thursday averaged 189.90 up 29.40
from last week and up 48.00 in two weeks.
Sales of slaughter cattle on a national basis
for negotiated cash trades were large at
224,600 head through 2:00 p.m Thursday.
Last week’s full count was large at 264,600
head.

enough live or dressed sales were re
ported to establish an adequate market
trend, but a weaker undertone was
noted on a few early sales. Sales last
week ranged from 105.00 to 110.00 in
the Southern Plains with some late
sales in Kansas at 100.00, 115.00 to
120.00 across the Northern tier on a live
basis. Dressed basis sales ranged from
180.00 to 185.00 in Nebraska and the
Combelt and Kansas dressed prices
were at mostly 172.00.
