The current finished market is playing leap frog with itself, as prices are drastically higher from one day to the next. After having over 40 head on Monday bring from 110.00-124.50, there was around another 50 head on Tuesday that sold for 120.00 or higher; with 11 head of high Choice and Prime steers weighing from 1255-1440 lbs trading from 130.00-132.50. It was another wild day in the national markets as well. The current October live cattle contract quickly moved up the limit first thing Tuesday morning to close at 100.32 at days end. It is worth noting that there was some bearishness in most of the further-out months at the Merc though, with contracts from Feb of 2004 and out closing down-the-hmit across the Board. Feeder cattle traders are also trying to keep from giving the current market too much rein, as the spot October feeder cattle contract closed down 137.50 at 107.30; with every month after Oct posting limit-down losses. However, meat markets hit the ground running on Tuesday, with the cutout values of Choice and Select car casses from 7.00, to over 8.00 higher. Choice cuts from around 189.00-190.00; Select from 166.00-168.00. The Nebraska feedyards held out as long as they could (although its only Tues day) to sell their finished supplies. They re ceived 115.00 for their live cattle, which are 15.00 higher, and 177.00-180.00 for their dress ed steers, which is 22.00-25.00 higher. Who knows where this market is heading, the only thing that is apparent is that producers are ab solutely besides themselves with Joy, seasoned cattle buyers are shaking their heads in disbe lief, and packets are hoping that this thing comes down to a ‘reasonable' level Slaughter cows in Vintage were steady to 3.00 higher, with some weakness noted on the fleshier cows. Slaughter bulls sold with a firmer undertone on a small test. The two-day run included an esti mated 332 head of slaughter steers, 40 slaughter heifers, 371 slaughter cows, IS slaughter bulls, and 279 head of feeder cattle. A full calf report will be issued Tuesday night. The Vintage Sales Stables held a special feed er cattle sale on Monday the 13th, which can be viewed at http://www.ams.usda.gov/mnreports/ LN-LSlBo.txt.
