HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) Commercial red meat produc
tion in Pennsylvania during August 2003 totaled 101.8 million
pounds, dressed weight basis, down 5 percent from August 2002,
according to the Pennsylvania Agricultural Statistics Service (PASS).
Beef production, at 108.8 million pounds live weight, was down 7
percent from August 2002. Total head slaughtered was 86,400 down 6
percent from last year. Average live weight decreased 13 pounds to
1,260 pounds. Veal production was 4.8 million pounds live weight,
down 12 percent from a year ago. Calf slaughter of 16,000 head was
down 14 percent, average live weight increased 6 pounds to 303
pounds.
Pork production, at 53.3 million pounds live weight, was up 2 per
cent from a year earlier. Total head slaughtered was 217,500, down
less than 1 percent. Average live weight increased 5 pounds to 245
pounds.
Lamb and mutton production was 700,000 pounds live weight, up 8
percent from 2002 The number slaughtered was 6,800, up 6 percent
from August of last year The average li\e weight increased 3 pounds
to 104 pounds from August 2002
Nationally, commercial red meat production for August 2003 total
ed 3 91 billion pounds, dressed weight basis, down 5 percent from the
4 14 billion pounds produced in August 2002. Beef production, at 2 33
billion pounds dressed weight basis, was 6 percent below the previous
year Veal production, at 14 2 million pounds, a new monthly low,
was 15 percent below August a year ago Pork production totaled 1.56
billion pounds, down 5 percent from the previous year. Lamb and
mutton production, at IS 7 million pounds, was down 6 percent from
August 2002.
January-August red meat production was 310 billion pounds, 1
percent below the previous year Accumulated beef production was
down 1 percent from last year, veal production was down slightly
from last year, pork was down slightly also, and lamb and mutton
production was down 10 percent.

Weekly Meat Production Under Federal Inspection
WASHINGTON, D.C., Oct. 3- (USDA-NASS) - Total red meat pro
duction under federal inspection for the week ending Saturday, Oct. 4,
was estimated at 893.0 million lbs, according to the USDA's Agricultural
Marketing Service. This was 1.1 percent lower than a week ago and 4.1
percent lower than a year ago. Cumulative meat production tor the year
to date was 0.4 percent lower compared to the previous year.
