week to the next. There was 216 head of bulls in
the overall graded run that will see a kill floor
in the near future, which goes to show demand
is increasing. Holstein bull calves going into
special-fed veal barns sold sharply higher on all
grades 94- 96 lb Number 2 bulls sold as much
as 8.00 higher that the same weight in the Num
ber 1 supply. The real bell-ringer was on a 27
head set of 94-96 lb Number 2 bulls which sold
for 200.00, or 22.00 higher than the same weight
in the Number I calves. Needless-to-say, de
mand was good throughout the graded sale,
and obviously grew by the time the auctioneer
got to the Number 2 side of the graded sheet.
Holstein heifers sold steady to weak on a fairly
light supply. The PA Department of Agricul
ture graded 586 head of bulls for the graded
sale, with an estimated 64 percent of the graded
run going into veal bams.
Slaughter Calves: Number 2, Number 3, and

Sheep and Lambs: Compared to Monday,
slaughter lams sold with a higher undertone.
However, remember the late week supply is
usually much lighter than the Monday run;
therefore, even moderate demand late in the
week can greatly outweigh the late week supply,
thus driving prices higher. Slaughter sheep sold
with a steady to firm undertone.

Slaughter Goats; Compared to Mondays 1100
head run, a light test of all classes sold with a
higher undertone. This was due to the excellent
late week demand. However, just like the lambs,
when the run fluctuates so much from early to
late week even moderate demand can translate
into much higher prices. All goats are sold by
the head, weights are estimated.

CATTLE CALVES
THIS WEEK 2275 1925
LAST WEEK 2468 1856
This week in Lancaster County, the bulk of
the Choice and high Choice slaughter steers
sold mostly steady, with some weakness noted
late in the week. Low Choice grades and lower
sold steady to firm, with heavier muscled Select
steers as much as 2.00 higher late in the week.
Receipts in Lancaster County are becoming
lighter as the high market over the past couple
of months has brought a lot of steers to town.
This is making it somewhat difficult to find the
really hard and long-feds. Nationally, the west
ern direct feedyards gained 1.00-2.00 this week

at mostly 90.00. Nebraska feedyards received
from 93.00-95.00 for their live cattle, mostly
1.00 higher Nebraska dressed sales from
145.00- or 200 higher. Live cattle con

the current cash trade, with spot October clos

feeder cattle contract at the Merc closed at
101.57 on Thursday as feeder cattle markets re
main very bullish. There is starting to be some
weakness noted on calves across the U.S., espe
cially if they are unvaccinated and bawling. Ev
eryone knows that fall brings pleasant days and
cold nights, making it tough to get a load of
calves lined out. However, yearling demand
couldn't be any better, with a very good run
(over 2300 head) of feeder cattle late last week
in Staunton, VA quoting heavy 7 weights up to
102.00, with heavy 8 weights up to %.00; which
had locals talking early in the week. Cutout val
ues have come down a little over the week, but
are still good; Choice cuts from around 157.00-
158.00, with the Select cutout still holding a
hefty discount at mostly 123.00. Back in the
County, Holstein slaughter steers sold steady to
firm, with a fancy load of reputation-fed Hol
steins on Monday fetching as much as 86.00.
Slaughter heifers sold steady to 1.00 higher.
Slaughter cows sold 1.00-3.00 lower early in the
week, with late week demand picking up with
Lean cows up to 1.00 higher, and fleshier cows
as much as 3.50 higher. Slaughter bulls sold
1.00- lower for the week. The reported sup
ply this week in Lancaster County included 636

heifers, 1036 head of slaughter cows, 197 head
of slaughter bulls, and 294 head of feeder cattle.

Compared to last week, > car ling feeder cattle
sold steady to firm Demand continues to be
very good, but buyers are becoming price cau
tious and are sacrificing numbers to stay within
the boundaries of their orders.
Feedlots sold cattle steady to 1 00 lower this
week as packers reduced chain speeds and
showed limited interest in buying under fin
ished cattle. The Choice-Select spread is nearl>
35 00 and inventories of Select boxes are start
ing to back up Demand remains outstanding
for Choice, but supplies are extremely limited
We are currently teetering on record prices for
feeder cattle, slaughter cattle, and dressed beef
The chance of holding these levels looks very
good with positive fundamental factors, but the
market seems to have run out of steam for the
time being.
Slaughter cow prices (which have also been at
record highs) were sharply lower this week. The
National Milk Producers Foundation unleashed
a dairy cow buyout program to reduce milk pro
duction. Cooperatives Working Together
(CWT) is projected to cull 33,000 cows by the
end of October. Although this is largely boneless
beef, a few retail cuts will be broken out and the
program will definitely weigh on the fed cattle
market.
Thin-weaned calves and large strings of fancy
calves in the mountain states sold steady to 3 00
higher, but this week’s calf market was domi
nated by un-weaned, fleshy new-crops and
prices for these types were steady to 4.00 lower.
Southeastern markets suffered the full decline
in calf prices as winter wheat interests failed to
hold the market. Plains wheat farmers are ei
ther too busy planting their crop or too busy
doctoring the calves that they have already
bought. Midwestern farmers have yet to enter
