Symposium Focuses On Pa. German Architecture
GREEN LANE (Montgomery Co.)
Public presentations of the Pennsylvania
German folk culture in the Goschenhop

sion of the Goschenhoppen Historians.
An aspect of this mission is the biannual

Each symposium presents a different
theme, and the third in the series will
address Pennsylvania German architec
ture.
The symposium is scheduled for Nov.
1. Four scholars of Pennsylvania Ger
man architecture will present aspects of
this continental tradition, including the
house, barn, outbuildings, and elements
of Pennsylvania German architecture.

terns remained purely Germanic for sev
eral generations after immigration.
Large numbers of these 18th and early
19th century structures remain for study
and preservation. For example, the Gos
chenhoppen Historians are restoring a
1736 purely Germanic house, the Henry
(Heinrich) Antes house. Prior to its res
toration, this large stone house on a
back road saw little change in more than
250 years.
This symposium series bears the name
of the late Reverend Thomas R. Bren
dle, the dean of Pennsylvania Dutch
Folklorists. During his years as a pastor
of the German Reformed- Church, he
collected over 15,000 individual entries
into 40 notebooks, each entry a Pennsyl
vania German folk belief, folk practice,
dialect vocabulary word, dia
lect riddle or local dialect
name of a geographic feature,
such as roads, hills, streams,
valleys and additionally, he re-
corded in the 1930’s wire re-
cordings of dialect folk music.
The Goschenhoppen Histo
rians owe a good part of their
founding to the urging of
Reverend Brendle to create a
preservationist society in the
historic Goschenhoppen folk region in
Upper Montgomery County.
Brendle’s admonitions were to col
lect not only the oral traditions (folk
lore) but the material culture as well.
An annual Pennsylvania German folk
festival, a folklife library and museum,
publications, and numerous tape-re
corded interviews with local Folklife
informants carry out his inspiration.
The Nov. 1 symposium at Red
Men’s Hall in Green Lane will be con
ducted from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The
cost is $35 per person, lunch included.
