Gerhart, Zimmermans, Donoughs Clinch
Championship Lamb Titles At Ephrata
(Continued from Page A4O)
grand champion breeding sheep a
Homed Dorset, which was named re
serve supreme champion. She also was
named champion showman over all
categories.
Siblings Joelynn and Ryan Donough
took nonsale champion and reserve
spots respectively. Joelynn also showed
an Oxford that was named reserve
champion ewe over all breeds.
Rod Crone, judge for the event, ex
plained his decisions to exhibitors and
gave pointers and demonstrations on
how to show off sheep to the best ad
vantage.
Crone said that Gerhart’s market
lamb had a beautiful profile, muscular
topline, and holds everything together
through the hips.
Gerhart, son of Glen and Cathy Ger
hart, said his market champion is a
bred and owned crossbred from his
Reinholds flock of 45-50.
The Zimmermans have 65-75 South
downs and 12 Homed Dorsets on the
family’s Reinholds farm, owned by par
ents Jay and Joann Zimmerman. This
was Jen’s last year of showing sheep,
and the first time her brother showed
the supreme breeding sheep over her.
“I’m happy,” the 21-year-old Jen
said. “To have a Homed Dorset named
supreme champion ewe over all breeds
is a statement in itself.”
Jimmy said his supreme ram is
named Stroll, because its rope became
entangled in a stroller when he trans
ported him home in a station wagon.
Stroll has some astounding blood rel
atives. His brother recently brought
$B,OOO at the Reno sale.
“We’re hoping Stroll
will do a lot of good for
the flock,” Jimmy’s
mom said.
In an about turn
from the Denver Fair,
Joelynn’s nonsale lamb
was named grand
champion, and her
brother Ryan’s lamb
was named reserve.
Parents of the siblings
are Ed and Laßue Do
nough, Manheim
“There is not a bad
one here. These lambs
could stand against al
most any place you
go,” Crone told the ex
hibitors.
