With all the planning, money, and labor that’s gone into your silage
crop, DON’T GET ANXIOUS AND CUT IT TOO EARLY!
You planted com for silage because of the high nutrient yield per acre,
and this is another year when you want to get the highest yield possible.
Immature com produces a lot of soggy, sour silage that’s low in feed
value. You may get a lot of weight with this green silage, but you will be
limiting the total feed value available from your com acreage.
Forages stored much above 65% moisture will weep, causing loss of
nutrients and damage to the silo, unloader, and feeding equipment. Feeds
containing more than 70% moisture provide an excellent environment for
harmful bacteria growth and production of undesirable acids, resulting in
lowered palatability. As your silage approaches 80% moisture, the total
weight in your silo nearly doubles.
There are now hundreds of silos in the Mid-Atlantic area that are over
80’ tall, with many 100’, 120’, and up to 148’. These farmers need to
plant com varieties with at least 3-4 maturity dates in order to have silage
ready for the bottom third of their silos when harvest begins. The mois
ture content of this bottom section of the silo should be about 55%. The
middle third should be about 60%, with the top third about 65%-67%.
It can be very easy to cut your feed too early if you are accustomed to
begin harvesting according to the calendar. With the wet spring we had in
many areas, the com crop will be spread out considerably concerning
maturity and moisture content.
Check your com crop closely to be sure that it is indeed ready to har
vest, As your com matures, it increases in total dry weight and most of
this increase is in the ear, the very heart of vour silage.
When you are storing from 1,000 to 4,000 tons of silage (or more) in
one tower silo, it is critical that you manage your silage crop to prevent
excessive moisture in the silo.
