Hamp/York Crossbreds Shine At Solanco Swine Show

QUARRYVILLE (Lancaster
Co.) Tiffany Dean’s “blue
butt” pigs made a big splash at
the Solanco Fair’s market swine
show last week.
Dean’s Hampshire/Y orkshire
crossbreds won in the light
heavyweight and heavyweight di
visions, with the 270-pound
heavyweight taking the overall
grand champion trophy.
Dean, a junior at Lampeter-
Strasburg High School, explained
how crossing the Hampshire and
Yorkshire breeds results in the
bluish coloring, especially in the
hind end and face of the animal.
“You combine a black pig and
a white pig and you get blue,”
she said.
Although Dean has shown the
blue pigs before, it’s the first time
they won at the Solanco Fair.
Dean, 17, is the daughter of
Gary and Joan Dean of Stras
burg.
Nicole Welk, an eight-grader
from Quarryville, exhibited the
lightweight champion, a
232-pound pig.
Justin Welk’s 240-pound hog
won the middleweight division.
Welk, 10, is the son of Don and
Emily Welk, Strasburg.
Judge Bob Miksell praised the
winners of the more than 100
swine shown by youth exhibitors.
